The James River Basin is a unique place in the Missouri Ozarks. It is located in a limestone karst region where sinkholes and springs are common and influence the watershed greatly. Flowing over one hundred miles from its headwaters to Table Rock Lake at Galena, it drains into Springfield and other urban and rural communities along the way in one the fastest growing regions in the country. The James River watershed is an important source of drinking water, aquatic habitat, and recreation to its residents. However, these benefits can degrade if good water quality is not maintained. This presentation will discuss the water quality problems related to the effects of excessive inputs of nutrients, sediment, bacteria, and runoff in the James River and its major tributaries. Recent scientific studies of water quality in the basin will also be evaluated to identify flow and chemical trends. Finally, several water projects by state and local governments, university units, and watershed groups aimed to protect and improve water quality in the James River Basin will be reviewed to help predict the future condition of the James River.

Historian & Lady Bears Coach to Reflect on First Champions in Women’s Collegiate Hoops

Date: Thursday, February 16
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Meyer Library Auditorium (Room 101)

Historian Julie Byrne will speak on the Immaculata College Mighty Macs, the subject of a 2011 feature film. Former Missouri State Lady Bears Coach Cheryl Burnett (who once played against the Macs) will respond to the talk.

Byrne is the author of O God of Players, the definitive history of the team that won the 1972, 1973, and 1974 collegiate women’s basketball championships. According to Yale historian Jon Butler, her book “recaptures the lost world of Catholic women’s basketball between 1940 and 1975 where faith, sweat, and even innocence triumphed as America and Catholicism changed uneasily and irrevocably.” Byrne holds the Monsignor Thomas J. Hartman Chair in Catholic Studies at Hofstra University. The title of her talk will be “O God of Players: Ten Years Later.”

Cheryl Burnett coached the Lady Bears from 1987 to 2002, including two NCAA Final Four appearances. As a college basketball player at the University of Kansas, she faced Immaculata on their home court. Burnett currently serves as a Director of Development at Missouri State University.

The Mighty Macs were featured in a 2011 movie praised by Tennessee Lady Vols Coach Pat Summitt and UConn’s Geno Auriemma. Byrne served as a consultant on the movie.

Proposed General Learning Goals

The Task Force on General Education Revision has developed the proposed general learning goals, rationale, and specific learning outcomes for Missouri State students by drawing from the American Association of Colleges and University’s recommended learning goals as well as those of other institutions in Missouri and across the country.

We ask that the campus community review these proposed goals and outcomes, which will be discussed by the Faculty Senate in February and March. Please send any questions and suggestions about the recommendations to your Faculty Senate or CGEIP representatives, for their consideration.

The Task Force will also recommend a revised curricular framework that should provide pathways for meeting these goals. By the end of the spring semester, there will be a call for proposals for courses, with clear guidelines for incorporating the proposed learning outcomes and their corresponding assessment plans.

In addition to using Respondus 4.0 to publish exams to Blackboard, it is now possible to publish an exam in Blackboard using a lock-down browser feature. Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment. Students access their Blackboard exam using the Respondus LockDown Browser and will be unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access areas of the course or other applications. This provides another layer of security for some of the most common types of digital cheating and will also eliminate the accidental or early exiting from online exams which is a common problem with online testing.

Sponsored by the Department of Religious Studies and CHPA

The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce that Dr. Gilbert Brown, Program Director, Student Affairs in Higher Education, College of Education, has been selected as the Provost Fellow for Public Affairs for 2012–2013. As Provost Fellow for Public Affairs, Dr. Brown will be responsible for the Public Affairs Conference in April 2013 and promoting the Public Affairs mission of the University. The topic for the 2013 Conference will be the university-wide Public Affairs theme “Inclusive Excellence.” Dr. Brown will shadow this year’s Provost Fellow for Public Affairs, Dr. Kurt Heinlein, in preparation for the work he will do in preparing for the 2013 Public Affairs Conference. Dr. Brown’s experience since 1997 teaching undergraduate and graduate diversity/multicultural classes at IUPUI, Franklin College, the University of Indianapolis as well as here at Missouri State, makes him an excellent selection to help develop our theme of “Inclusive Excellence.”

“Within the university community, inclusive excellence is the institution’s purposeful efforts to untangle barriers that have for different reasons constrained the institution from maximizing the talent of our students, faculty, and staff to accomplish individual, department and institutional goals,” said Dr. Brown. “In the larger community, inclusive excellence means that we seek to cultivate a spirit throughout the state that seeks to support Missourians recognizing and cultivating talent among our citizenry from different backgrounds.”

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Gilbert Brown as the 2012–2013 Provost Fellow for Public Affairs.

Proposal deadline is Friday, November 18

Proposals for the 2013–2014 public affairs theme topics are being accepted through Friday, November 18. As is the case with this year’s theme of Culture of Connectivity and the 2012–2013 theme of Inclusive Excellence, the intent is to identify and adopt a theme that can permeate the campus community for the academic year. While public affairs themes generally focus on challenges in public policy or issues confronting our world, you are encouraged to submit any and all ideas. The ultimate theme will be developed in a collaborative manner involving representatives of the university community; these individuals will be looking for a concept that can engage and excite the campus and provide meaningful opportunities for learning. In addition to serving as the focal point of the Annual Public Affairs Conference, the theme should be broad enough to be used in a wide variety of both curricular and co-curricular activities, yet focused enough to be illustrative of our public affairs components: community engagement, cultural competency and/or ethical leadership.

Proposals should include a brief (1 page) description of the theme and how it would fulfill the above criteria (including specific examples of curricular and co-curricular activities that could take place). Because the Associate Provost for Student Development and Public Affairs will select a Provost Fellow to coordinate the year-long activities, and in particular, to serve as the coordinator of the 2014 Public Affairs Conference, proposals including the name(s) of potential Fellows are encouraged. Send all proposals to Rachelle Darabi, Associate Provost for Student Development and Public Affairs by Friday, November 18. We plan to have the theme selected by December 15.

An Evening with David “Sonny” Lacks

Date: Wednesday, November 30
Time: 7 p.m.

David “Sonny” Lacks, the middle child of Henrietta Lacks, has enthralled university audiences across the country talking about his mother, Henrietta Lacks, and her important contributions to modern medicine. The international success of the New York Times bestseller about his mother, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” has left people keenly interested in the Lacks Family and Henrietta’s legacy. In his MSU appearance, Sonny will share with the audience what it meant to find out—decades after the fact—that his mother’s cells were being used in laboratories around the world without the family’s knowledge or consent. He puts a face on the big issues such as the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics and the legal battles over “informed consent.” The presentation will be in a moderated question and answer format.

This is a free event, but a ticket will be required for admission. Tickets may be picked up at Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts, JQH Arena or the Plaster Student Union ticket offices. Seating will be general admission, first come first seated. For additional information, visit the Public Affairs website.

Suggestions for a Common Reader in GEP 101

Recommendations must be received by Thursday, November 17

The First-Year Programs office is currently accepting recommendations of books suitable to use as a common reader in GEP101, First-Year Foundations. All sections of GEP101 and some sections of UHC 110 will read the book.

We need your help in identifying books that relate to the 2012–2013 Public Affairs theme, Inclusive Excellence. Based on the university’s long range plan, Inclusive Excellence is defined as the recognition that an institution’s success is dependent on how well it values, engages and includes a rich diversity of people with all the valuable social dimensions that they provide. Although the university’s long range plan focuses specifically on Inclusive Excellence as a dimension of the university experience, the common reader may also explore facets of the theme as they relate to society.

An ideal common reader selection will explore the theme in ways that students coming from a variety of disciplines and interests can relate to. The books you recommend need to be written for a general audience, requiring little or no expertise with the topic in order to understand the book.

The selection committee will consider both fiction and nonfiction. Our main evaluation of books will be based on the book’s relationship to the conference theme, the quality of the book itself, and the book’s suitability for first-year students.

Please send nominations to FirstYearPrograms@missouristate.edu. Include the following information: the title of the book, the author of the book, and a brief explanation about why you are recommending the book.

Suggestions for a Common Reader in GEP 101

Recommendations must be received by Thursday, November 17.

We hear a lot about how people can positively and negatively affect the environment, but we need to ask how nature can affect people. Often, we hear about environmental hazards to human health. Less frequently, we hear about the benefits of nature to people. Being outdoors, whether for recreation or a purposeful study of nature, can improve physical and psychological health. Nature can have economic benefits and positively affect our quality of life. This talk will discuss the many benefits of nature and give specific examples.

Still Time to Submit a Public Affairs Theme Topic for 2013–2014

Proposal deadline is Friday, November 18

Proposals for the 2013–2014 public affairs theme topics are being accepted through November 18. As is the case with this year’s theme of Culture of Connectivity and 2012–2013 theme of Inclusive Excellence, the intent is to identify and adopt a theme that can permeate the campus community for the academic year.

David “Sonny” Lacks, the middle child of Henrietta Lacks, has enthralled university audiences across the country talking about his mother, Henrietta Lacks, and her important contributions to modern medicine. The international success of the New York Times bestseller about his mother, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” has left people keenly interested in the Lacks Family and Henrietta’s legacy. In his MSU appearance, Sonny will share with the audience what it meant to find out–decades after the fact–that his mother’s cells were being used in laboratories around the world without the family’s knowledge or consent. He puts a face on the big issues such as the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics and the legal battles over “informed consent.” The presentation will be in a moderated question and answer format.

This is a free event, but a ticket will be required for admission. Tickets will be available exclusively to the MSU community (students, faculty and staff) November 7–10. Starting November 11, remaining tickets will be available to both the MSU community and the Springfield community. Tickets may be picked up at Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts, JQH Arena or the Plaster Student Union ticket offices.
Seating will be general admission, first come first seated. For additional information,
