Today we are fortunate to have Dr. Art Spisak as a guest blogger! Dr. Spisak is the Director of the Missouri State Honors College. I asked Dr. Spisak to speak about our Honors College for our incoming students….Here’s Dr. Art Spisak!

Just a bit of information on Missouri State’s Honors College for those interested. We currently have about 1,050 students in the program. To give some perspective to that number, there are about 13,500 full-tine undergraduate students at Missouri State. Honors College students are in all majors and in nearly all residence halls on campus, although Scholars House and the eighth floor of Hutchens are exclusive to honors students. That means that you can have an Honors College student in your hall, even in your suite, sometimes without knowing it.

To get into the Honors College graduating high school students must have a composite score of 27 or higher on the ACT (or the SAT equivalent) and also either be in the top 10% of their graduating class or have a gpa of 3.9 or higher. To remain in the program, once accepted, they must maintain a gpa of 3.25 at Missouri State. That’s usually not a problem — in fact, our average gpa for Honors College students is over 3.8.

These are professors who are typically high achievers themselves and are also good at working with high capability students.

They also have library lending privileges that are the same as graduate students.

Reapplication is that time of the year when our current residents decide if they want to live in the same space they are in now for next year or if they want to move to a different room or if they want to move off-campus. Of course we want them to come back and live with us next year, but we know that’s not feasible….why?

Well Missouri State requires all incoming freshmen who are single and not living with their parents or grandparents and who live more than 60 miles from campus to live on-campus. That’s a bunch of people! So if all of our current students decided to live with us again next year, we wouldn’t have room for you—our incoming residents for the 2009 – 10 academic year!

We typically house around 4000 residents in our halls which vary in size from barely over 100 residents to over 700! Of these 4000 residents, typically around 1500 reapply to live with us the next year. This is a good number for us because we expect about 2500 incoming residents each fall.

We always stress with our returning residents and our new residents the advantages of living on-campus:

–No hassle finding a parking spot each day
–Usually someone cook your meals and cleans the bathrooms (there are some exceptions to this)
–Building lifelong friendships and relationships
–Higher GPA than your counterparts living off-campus
–Access to many resources and opportunities to help you academically and socially
–and the list goes on and on!

We look forward to having our returning students back next year, but we are also looking forward to having you Discover the College Life!
