This past weekend began the spring break for Missouri State, March 6 through March 14. We’ll reconvene our meetings for Sierra Club on Wednesday, March 17. That’s St. Patrick’s Day.

Can you guess the locations of the world’s greenest sports stadiums? Find out here.

When school resumes, we’ll continue tallying the recycling bins on campus. So many buildings to search!

Clay, Marissa, & Taylor:
awesome work on guiding us!

Three hours of thrills and chills without any spills.

Steep drops, thin ridges, lofty spaces, and close quarters. Water, wet clay, bats, moon milk, darkness, tales of albino monsters, bizarre underground wonders, and one stray frog. A very satisfying day.

Thanks for the adventure!

Talk continues about proposals for the Student Sustainability Fund.

Please bring ideas to this week’s meeting so that we can get Missouri State closer to being a green school, as ranked by the national Sierra Club. Thank you!

For fodder, here’s an article about projects at UCLA.

Soggy trails and merry spirits abound at Hercules Glades

Our Hercules Glades camping and hiking trip was a great success: without injury and fun for all. We got to the wilderness after dark. Battling the rain, fog, and cold we set up a satisfying shelter that kept us dry and allowed our fire to rage. It was an early night for some, but many stayed up telling stories and playing music.

The hike was wonderful too. The trails were saturated and the river was high; it was impossible to keep your feet dry. There wasn’t much wildlife to be seen, but this also includes the presence of other people. The glades were great, and the meadows provided an excellent place for peace.

This was a great trip to start the year!

We’re back with even more members for 2010! People expressed lots of enthusiasm and shared their ideas about projects and goals during our first meeting of the year. Sounds like we’ll continue the strong commitment and build even more partnerships.

For more information about Sierra Club at Missouri State University, take a peek at the other sections of our blog.

In celebration of graduation, winter, & writing

We’ve finished the fall semester, commencement happened, and the holidays are almost here. Without students, the MSU campus looks somewhat eerie. Sierra Club will resume business in early January for the spring semester. Best wishes to all of us for a wonderful winter vacation!

Scholarship & merriment at Missouri State

Before people get too occupied with their studies, we’ll have a party to celebrate a few graduations. I’ll coordinate with Clay. He’ll host the festivities at his house.

After several years of ab-busting work, I’ve obtained my degree for Master of Arts in Writing (technical and professional track). Friday morning I dallied at Gailey’s Breakfast Cafe in downtown Springfield. My dad loved the flurry and charm of diners like this. Once the long-time home of a pharmacy and soda fountain, the building stood empty for some years before Gailey’s opened with its medley of old-fashioned meals and interesting vignettes.

After a breakfast of strong, hot tea (Earl Grey), thick slabs of buttery French toast, and crispy curls of bacon, I walked to First and Calvary Church to meet my brother Joe and my nephew Ollie at the reception prior to commencement. At four months of age, Ollie remains beguiled by each scene of life!

Later, done with the ceremony at JQH Arena, I stashed my gown, hood, and diploma—okay, the emblazoned cover of my diploma, as the official paper arrives by mail—in my bookbag and headed to Cheek Computer Lab. The black cap felt so dang good, with its maroon tassel swinging against my face, that I wore it all afternoon. I didn’t take off the cap and tassel until friends and I went to dinner at Rosie Jo’s Cafe in Ozark.

So what does any of this have to do with the MSU Sierra Club? Not a thing, except that sharing activities with my peers in Sierra Club count for many of my favorite times at Missouri State. So, as perhaps a last link from me, take a minute to watch this video from the BBC of an octopus recycling coconut shells.

Wondering about water and its reservoirs?

In one of my classes for technical writing, we recently saw THIRST, a web-based presentation created by Jeff Brenman of Apollo Ideas. Brenman designed the presentation to elicit conversation and inquiry about the emerging global shortage of fresh water. THIRST won first place in the 2008 World’s Best Presentation Contest on SlideShare.net. You’ll need access to Adobe Flash Player to view THIRST.

Good news, folks: Dillan Conn’s story about our Halloween recycling drive during Bearfest appears in this week’s edition of The Standard, with photos by Jason Chambers: “Sierra Club recycles Bear Fest Trash“.

Clay (Zombie Wal-M clerk), Tyler (Superman disguised as Chuck Norris), and Marissa (Dr. Berger) got camera-time.

Here are two of our own snapshots from Halloween Homecoming. I’ll see about creating a slideshow.
