Last night SMAT took the ice at Mediacom Ice Park in Springfield, MO in order to learn about hockey equipment, considerations for health care providers in this sport, and to practice spine boarding on the ice! Members of the Athletic Training Students’ Association (ATSA) and the Clinical Practicum III Course (ATC 340) along with faculty, staff, and graduate assistants of the SMAT department were present for the event.
ATSA members provide coverage to Missouri State Hockey in the role of a first aid provider during home games in their season. Additionally, SMAT-affiliated ATs – Jennifer McRae, Dr. W. David Carr and graduate student Megan Mulloy all will be providing coverage for MSU Hockey this season. In order to provide the best care to athletes, it was important for these individuals to attend this event to become familiar with the facility and unique hockey equipment.
Students in ATC 340 attended the event as part of a class unit on emergency care techniques. During this unit, students gain experience in less common emergency techniques such as spine boarding on the ice. Also as part of this unit, students will be spine boarding in the water and working in a high-fidelity simulation laboratory to practice CPR skills.
Additionally, lead by Jennifer McRae, participants learned and practiced the proper way to walk out onto the ice in order to respond to an injured athlete.
Thank you to Mediacom Ice Park, members of the MSU Hockey team for their time and assistance with the event!
