First year MSU athletic training students are learning all the basics in ATC 220, Introduction to Athletic Training. As part of a unit on blood borne pathogens and wound care, students participated in a lab where they learned how to properly apply and remove gloves.
In addition, they were able to clean and Steri-strip a wound…In this case the “wound” was to a tomato, however, the students learned they ways these skills transfer directly to an actual patient. First year athletic training students practiced cleaning dirt and debris (coffee grounds) out of the open wound in order to remove potentially infection-causing contaminants.
In a few short weeks, these students will begin to learn about primary evaluations in order to respond to injuries. Additionally, the much-anticipated taping and wrapping unit will begin after fall break. Here, students will learn how to properly tape a number of different joints including the ankle, foot, and wrist.
Keep up the GREAT work students!
