Connecting Students to the Board of Governors

Questions/Comments Regarding MSU

Good Evening!

After many articles that have come out recently both in the Springfield News-Leader and The Standard, many students may have questions and comments regarding their University. I have been in consistent contact with the Chair of the Board, Ms. Elizabeth Bradbury, and she asked me to remind the students that the Board is always interested in listening to the student body.

As the Student Governor, it is part of my job to help bridge the Board to the Student Body, and I am very interested and committed to helping the Board understand student thoughts and opinions on issues that are pertinent to them. If you have any comments, questions, concerns, or things you would like to discuss, please send those to me in one of these ways:

1) Send and e-mail to brandt1@live.missouristate.edu
2) Leave a comment here on the Report. (Please include a way for me to get back to you)
3) Leave messages in my mailbox, located in the Student Government Association Office, PSU 123. (Please include a way for me to get back to you.
4) Stop me on campus and I would be more than happy to discuss anything with you.

I hope that I hear from many of you. The more student voices that are heard, the more informed of a decision the Board can make.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving, and Go Bears!

Board of Governor’s Meeting – Oct. 22nd

Good evening!

The next Board of Governor’s meeting will be held on October 22nd, 2010 at 10 am in room 313 of the Plaster Student Union. A complete agenda can be found at http://apps.missouristate.edu/bog/agenda/default.htm.

Here are a few highlights that students might be interested in:

President Cofer will be giving a report to the Board, that includes an update on the Budget, and update on the Long Range Plan, and update on Diversity, and approval of the 2010 Bronze Bear award.

Provost McCarthy will update the Board on Low-Completer Programs, Academic Affairs progress on the 2010-11 goals, and a restructure of the Darr School of Agriculture.

Dr. Doman will give an enrollment update, a student affairs update, and a housing update.

Student Body President Jacob Swett will give a report to the Board.

I would like to encourage as many students to attend this meeting of the Board to hear these reports. This is a great way to learn more about your University, and to know where we are headed next. For those unable to attend, I will be posting a re-cap of the meeting and the reports early next week.

Until then, Go Bears! Have a great homecoming week! I will see you at the game on Saturday!

Current Projects and Student Governors/Regents/Curators Association

Good morning!

Just an update of some things I have been working on this week, along with plans for the rest of this week relating to the Board of Governors:

Monday: communicated with the Student Governor from Missouri Western State University, Peter Gregory, concerning Missouri State’s smoking policy.  MWSU is looking at instituting a smoking ban, so I helped him get in contact with a leader of the smoking policy changes here at Missouri State, Adam Murphy.

Tuesday:  Met with Jeff Morrissey, CIO and Kevin Piercy, Coordinator of User Support Services, to discuss SCUF funding, printing quotas, and how that relates to students.  Lots of  interesting information that would take a long time to summarize here, but if you have any specific questions, please e-mail me or leave a comment, and I can make sure that you receive the information you need.

Wednesday:  Met with June McHaney, Director of Internal Audit to learn more about the audit process and how the internal audits affect the University and students.

Thursday: I am attending a luncheon hosted by the University of Missouri Board of Curators to discuss the future of higher education in Missouri.

Friday;  I will be meeting with the University of Missouri Student Curator, Laura Confer from Missouri Science and Technology to discuss SGRCA.

Now what is this SGRCA? One of my goals when I became Student Governor was to create an organization of all the Student Governors/Regents/Curators from across the state.  About a week ago, I sent out an e-mail to all of them about creating an association that we could share ideas with, that we could discuss issues that are affecting our campuses, and that we could collaborate so if another university has started a change, we wouldn’t all have to re-invent the wheel.  MWSU pursuing a smoking ban is an example of this. This idea is still in its infancy, and at the moment, mostly an experiment, but I am excited for it’s potential, and I am hoping that my meeting with Curator Confer will help flesh it out to a great resource for all of Missouri’s Universities.

That is all for this edition.  Once again, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please shoot me an e-mail at brandt1@live.missouristate.edu or leave a comment on this page, and I will be more than happy to get back to you.

Welcome to the Report and Board Retreat

Good Evening, and welcome to the Student Governor Report!  This blog is designed to help inform students about what is going on campus concerning the Board of Governors, and how it affects you.

The first item is the Board of Governors’ Summer Retreat, held August 28-30th.  The two major items discussed at this retreat were the 5 year positioning guide, and the goals for Missouri State for the 2010-11 school year.  These documents can be found at http://www.missouristate.edu/bog/retreats.htm

These documents are currently only drafts, but will be very important for Missouri State.  The positioning guide gives us a goal to strive for, or a target.  The goals for 2010-11 are what we are going to do in the short range to push ourselves towards that target for the year.

The reason we have posted these is so we can receive input from the campus community, and I am very interested in what  suggestions you, the students, have for these goals.  Please feel free to send me any input you have, or comment here, and I will be sure to take this input into consideration as we continue to modify and adapt these goals until we come to our final decision.

On that note, I am always available to meet with, talk to, or read any e-mail you send me.  It is my personal goal to be accessible  and to meet as many students as possible, so I can bring your views to the Board for the important decisions that affect you.  Stop by my office in PSU 119, or shoot me an e-mail at brandt1@live.missouristate.edu any time.

That is it for this edition of the report!
