After looking into it further, I have decided I am going to just do a carry on and a personal bag.
My carry on will match the sizing limits for American (22 x 14 x 9 in) so that I can get the most out of it. This just seems easier and I like knowing that my luggage is nice and safe between all the flights we will be boarding.
My personal bag will be the bag I use when we go hiking or on any explorations. I figured, just for when we’re on planes, I will use the smaller, personal bag for any travel-sized toiletries and all the little things and my carry on will hold all my clothes so that it’s nice and light when I’m dragging it with me. This will also help (at least a little) to keep me from overpacking so much!

I like your insight on this. I’ve been torn between bringing a large bag to check in than just a carry on and personal bag. Your decision seems like the more reasonable one and it will be a lot easier to carry everything around to the different places we will travel.

Catherine,
We will be boarding some flights (Air Asia) that will allow you to carry less as carry-on, so be expected to check in your carry-on. I already prepaid for a check in luggage for those legs of the flights.
