So today I registered for STEP, which is Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. Its available through the Bureau of Consular Affairs. Step is a free service to allow US citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest US Embassy or Consulate. It is pretty easy to sign up, you just have to have all of your travel information. The way it works is you will receive important information from the closest Embassy to you while abroad about safety conditions. Also, if there is an emergency such as natural disaster, civil unrest or even family emergency you will be contacted. You can also set up an emergency contact person. I signed my dad up since my mom will be meeting in the Maldives. I am really glad I signed up, obviously I hope we wont have to be contacted for any of these reasons. However it feels good to be prepared.

This is a really good idea and thank you so much for sharing it! I will probably sigh up for this as well. It would definitely ease up my family’s nerves knowing I can be more prepared for the unexpected.

Hannah,
We already registered you with the State Dept. from May 20 – June 2. Emily needed to do it because she is extending her trip.
