I was reviewing the itinerary and decided to visit the official website of the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. I found some things to remember during our visit in their “about us” link:
- Always carry your passport/ identity card
- Always keep a safe distance from animals
- Do not feed the animals
- Do not tease any animals.
- Do not pick flowers or damage any plants or trees
- Do not enter restricted areas.
- Do not make noise playing musical instruments, radios, tape recorders and singing etc.
- Pets are not allowed within Zoo premises
- Smoking is prohibited within the premises.
- Posses your ticket at all time within the premises
- Please quote your ticket number and the date of visit for any correspondence

Most of the elephants at Pinnawala are healthy and once attaining adulthood, will be retained within the facility mostly since they have become dependent on supplied food.
A few disabled elephants are given residential care. One tusker, Raja is blind, and one female, named Sama, lost her front right leg to a land mine.
