This past weekend the Missouri State University Water Ski Team competed in the Midwest Regional Championships in Decatur, IL and took home 3rd place! The third place finish qualifies them for Division I Nationals. The team will be traveling to Austin, TX Oct 14-16 to compete in event held by the National Collegiate Water Ski Association and Texas State University. This is the third time the Bears will be making the trip to Nationals, the first time in 2007 in DI and the second time in 2008 in Division II.
The women’s team took 1st place slalom, jump, and 2nd place tricks both at Regionals and at the Conference Championships. Women who made a podum in individual events include Jordan Dutro—3rd in slalom, 3rd in jump, 4th place overall; Stephanie Elhoffer- tied for 4th in tricks, tied for 2nd overall; Justine Vaughan- tied for 4th in tricks, 5th place overall. In the men’s event Paul Tierney place 4th in slalom.
There are currently 110 colleges and universities in the US with competitive waterski teams that make up the National Collegiate Waterski Association memership. The top 22 qualify each year for the National Competition.
MSU is one of 43 teams in the Midwest Region. The fall tournament season has been in full swing as the teams vie for the chance to compete at the Midwest Regional Championships in Decatur, IL Oct 1-3, 2010. Conference tournaments in the region over the past weeks determined the top 16 teams to compete at the Regional level. The Top 3 winners from Regionals go on to compete in the Division I Nationals. Wisconsin Madison took top honors, Purdue University 2nd and Missouri State snatched the 3rd spot ahead of Ohio State and University of Cinncinati. Those 4th and 5th place teams will compete in Division II along with Iowa State.
