Our office is often asked for guidance and assistance with social media campaigns. Since we often receive questions on how best to begin a social media campaign, I thought it would be helpful to share a list of best practices.
Below you will find key points for achieving the goals of strengthening your web presence, leveraging your existing channels of communication, and connecting your campaign with real world events. While all of the practices below do not apply to everyone, there are many important factors to keep in mind if you are planning on running a social media campaign, and most of these issues apply to your general use of social media as well.
Earlier this week I had the honor of sitting in as the resident social media expert advisor for a webinar titled Apps & Web 2.0: Legal Issues in Using the Internet in Class hosted by the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning. This webinar is presented by Dr. Stephanie Delaney from Cascadia Community College and she does a wonderful job of explaining complex issues such as FERPA and privacy issues in using Web 2.0 technology in the classroom. I would highly suggest that anyone on campus who is interested in these issues check out the DVD of the webinar from FCTL.

We undertook our first real test of live streaming an event on campus during the Spring 2011 Commencement ceremonies. Seth Odell’sReal-Time Campus Event Coverage session I attended at the CASE District VI conference last January was enormously helpful in guiding us on a successful path to begin more streaming of events on our campus.
Over the three Commencement ceremonies, we had 501 total viewers, which exceeded our expectations for such a low-key test. There have been over 1200 views of the archived videos on Ustream as well.
