School is back in session, so training is on the minds of educators who want to stay on top of current resources and keep their skills sharp!
Project ACCESS is scheduling trainings and we’ve got some all set up for you to join:
- Introduction to the Education of Students with Autism – This two-day training (we also have a free online version, completed at your own pace!) is designed to give educators/school staff members working with students with autism an overview of autism as an educational disorder. Essential methods for assessing behaviors are taught and basic programming strategies are introduced. Topics include: definition of autism and Missouri’s educational eligibility criteria for special education and related services; descriptions of sensorimotor integration issues, communication issues, social and relatedness issues; assessing behaviors for their messages; the social stories teaching strategy; structuring and scheduling in the classroom; and essential features of effective programming for students with autism.

- Working with Students with Autism in the Schools (WASS) – This four-day, face-to-face training is split into two, two-day presentations four to six weeks apart. Participants practice specific ways to analyze and alter environment, develop effective programs, adjust curriculum through IEP writing, and analyze behavioral data to determine appropriate interventions. Collaborative teaming is strongly encouraged.Topics to be covered include:
- specific ways to analyze and alter the environment;
- analyzing behavioral data to determine appropriate interventions;
- developing effective programs through IEP writing;
- creating a system for organizing educational strategies;
- teaching new skills and behaviors to students;
- and working in collaborative teams to achieve the most success.
Discover information about behavior and reinforcement, social skills training, augmentative and alternative communication, and functional communication training. Prerequisite: Introduction to the Education of Students with Autism.

In this session, learn how to use function-based interventions to efficiently and effectively reduce problem behaviors. Begin by identifying target behaviors and determine the reason behind these maladaptive responses. Use this information to select an appropriate and effective intervention. We will discuss a multitude of interventions for each type of behavior.
