Here are several links to children’s books about a child with ASD and his/her sibling. These encompass stories to teach children about their sibling with ASD, share experiences with other children who have siblings with ASD, and help siblings and parents cope with specific characteristics of autism that can make relationships challenging at times. This is not an exhaustive list, but a starting point to find additional publishers and authors that create stories for children with autism, their siblings, and their families. He’s My Brother by Joe Lasker:
This is another good children’s book, a little old in its images, but a nice description of characteristics common in individuals with ASD (Also available from Barnes and Noble).
Joey and Sam: “A Heartwarming Storybook About Autism, a Family, and a Brother’s Love” by Illana Katz and M.D. Ritvo Edward: This story is about a 6-year old with a 5-year old brother with Autism and the book shares the brother’s frustrations with his sibling, but concludes with him stating “I love you the way you are” (Also available from Barnes and Noble).
The last book to mention is Views From Our Shoes by Donald Joseph Meyer, a collection of essays in which 45 siblings share their experiences as the brother or sister of someone with a disability. The children whose essays are featured here range from ages four to eighteen and are the siblings of youngsters with a variety of special needs, including autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, ADD, hydrocephalus, visual and hearing impairments, Down and Tourette syndromes.
