My Autism Journey day 8-Coming home from our visit with behavioral medicine I felt ready to start our work. We had lots of behaviors to deal with, but the doctor had recommended picking the one that was the worst to start with. For us that was aggression-hitting, kicking, biting, pulling hair, and scratching. If nothing else could ever be fixed that was the one that HAD to stop. Our plan was to say, “no hurt” and take her to her room. For the purposes of this we reversed the lock on her bedroom door. This sounded all very wrong, but I promise you I was just in the hallway!!! It was important to be right there because as soon as she was quiet I needed to open the door and say “good quiet..let’s play.” This was a commitment because it happened A LOT. We weren’t going to clutter up her mind with tons of words, so we decided on the generic phrases for consistency (hurt instead of naming the variety of aggression). The first couple of days I got nothing done but this. Eventually, the time started to decrease, but then she turned her room into a playground and that’s when I had to call the hotline.
