A new collaboration between the American Speech-Language Hearing Association’s “Identify the Signs” campaign, and the nonprofit company Bright by Text, sends caregivers of children ages 2-6 text messages about childhood communication development.
A recent healthcare and educational needs survey identified communication development as a subscribers’ top concern. No caregiver wants to worry if their child is okay, but how do you know what qualifies as “ok?” Through these messages, that are timed according to your child’s birthday, provide information on speech development, warning signs of a speech-language disorder, activities to promote speech and language development at home, and more. The service is currently available in both English and Spanish.
If caregivers are made aware of potential risk factors early on, there is a greater chance of earlier diagnosis and intervention, particularly in areas of disability where communication is a large area of deficit, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder.
