Transfer Student Spotlight: Jordan Clubb

October 21, 2022 by Campbell M. Keele

Meet Jordan Clubb, a transfer student from Springfield, MO!

Jordan transferred to MSU from Ozarks Technical Community College, where she earned an associate’s degree. Jordan is pursing the Psychology program at Missouri State University.

When asked why she chose to transfer to Missouri State University, Jordan says, “I wanted to have a larger range of classes that coincided with my major and that were affordable. My credits also transferred over easily to MSU.”

That leads to not only Jordan’s most challenging, but also most experience when transferring to Missouri State University. Jordan says it was a challenge to, “double- and triple-check that all the classes I had previously taken transferred over with me” and to “make sure I had all the substitutions necessary”. But Jordan says the most enjoyable part of her experience was working with those who made that happen. Jordan really enjoyed “working with the transfer department and my academic advisors.”

If Jordan could give some advice to a new transfer student, Jordan would recommend that transfer students “do their research and communicate. Both are critical. Find your classes, and the semester that you want to take them, and map it all out. Communicate with your advisor and/or the transfer staff about any questions you have, or any substitutions that need to be put in place.”

Jordan would like to use this opportunity to give a shoutout to the people who helped the most in her transition to Missouri State University: Donna Rebmann (the MSU-OTC transfer specialist), who “was a huge help”, and her older brother, Preston, (who also transferred to MSU), who “already had a sense of what to look for and where to find it”.

Transfer Student Spotlight: Sandy Crombie

October 21, 2022 by Campbell M. Keele

Meet Sandy Crombie, a transfer student from Ness City, KS!

Sandy transferred from Ozarks Technical Community College, with an Associates Degree in General Studies. Sandy was a member of Phi Theta Kappa while at OTC. Sandy is pursuing a degree in Communication Studies, with a minor in English. Sandy is a member of Phi Sigma Pi and the Nontraditional Student Organization at Missouri State University.

When asked why Sandy chose to transfer to Missouri State University, Sandy said she chose MSU because of, “The location. I’ve lived in Springfield, MO for 9 years now.” Sandy also mentioned that the ease of transferring, between working with an OTC-MSU transfer specialist and her current academic advisor, was not only a reason she chose Missouri State University but was also the most enjoyable part of her transfer experience.

Sandy’s advice for a transfer student new to Missouri State University is to, “Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask. You won’t get an answer until you ask.”

Sandy would like to use this opportunity to give a shoutout to the people who helped her the most in her transition to Missouri State University: Donna Rebmann (MSU’s OTC-MSU Transfer Specialist), Jay Howard (Sandy’s current academic advisor), and her two children (Alayni and Camden).

Transfer Student Spotlight: Ross Brady

October 20, 2022 by Campbell M. Keele

Meet Ross Brady, a transfer student from the Lake of the Ozarks!

Ross transferred to Missouri State University from Westminster College and is pursuing a General Studies degree. When asked why Ross chose Missouri State University, Ross said, “I was looking for more. MSU offered more academics and activities around campus.”

Ross expressed that the most challenging part of his transfer experience was adjusting to the size of Missouri State University’s campus. He says, “Finding my classes and learning how to manage my time to get to all of my classes was a challenge at first.”

For Ross, the most enjoyable part of transferring to Missouri State University has been “all of the activities”. Ross is participating in Ultimate Frisbee and intramural sports. Ross says, “There is so much to do! I am never bored.”

That leads to his advice for a new transfer student at Missouri State University, which is to not be scared. Ross says, “Everyone is scared, but don’t let it hold you back from meeting someone or joining a club. Get involved on campus! Also, be willing to fail. People might not want to talk, or a class might not work, but don’t be scared to fail. You’ll never know until you try.”

Ross would like to take this opportunity to give a shoutout to someone who helped him through his transition to Missouri State University: his cousin, Jennifer. Ross says, “Jennifer helped me realize that a big university wasn’t such a bad thing, and that the opportunities are endless.”

Transfer Student Spotlight: Katie Cowan

October 19, 2022 by Campbell M. Keele

Meet Katie Cowan, a transfer student from Strafford, MO!

Katie transferred to Missouri State University from Ozarks Technical Community College, where she earned an Associate of Arts in General Studies. Katie chose OTC because it, “allowed me to get CORE42 and Communication prerequisites out of the way before transferring, so I could go right into courses for my major and minor.”

Katie earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies, along with a minor in General Business and an Undergraduate Certificate in Conflict and Dispute Resolution, from Missouri State University. Katie is now pursing MSU’s Master’s in Communication, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Applied Communication.

Katie says she chose to transfer to Missouri State University because, “of the location. MSU is close to family, friends, and my support system. I was also offered the Transfer Excellence Scholarship, which helped me graduate with zero debt.”

Katie expressed that the most challenging part of her transfer experience was, “keeping track of all of the deadlines. There are many deadlines for applying, sending transcripts, getting scholarships, and registering for classes that I had to stay on top of.”

Katie said the most enjoyable part of her transfer experience was, “Just being physically here on campus. It made all of the stress and looming deadlines dissipate. It also encouraged me to not only finish my bachelor’s degree, but to pursue a master’s degree and, ultimately, a career in higher education.” This leads to Katie’s advice for a transfer student, which is to, “Get involved because it can give your institution more of a college feel.”

Katie would like to take this opportunity to give a shoutout to the people who helped her the most in her transition to Missouri State University: her parents and her partner, who were “really encouraging and helped me out a lot”. Katie says the biggest shoutout, though, goes to Donna Rebmann, MSU’s OTC-MSU liaison.

Transfer Student Spotlight: Billy Dudley

October 18, 2022 by Campbell M. Keele

Meet Billy Dudley, a transfer student from Lebanon, MO!

Billy transferred to Missouri State University from Ozarks Technical Community College-Springfield campus. Billy is pursuing the Communication Sciences & Disorders/Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program at Missouri State University.

When asked why Billy chose to transfer to Missouri State University, Billy says, “MSU has a fantastic 2+2 plan for my major, where MSU honored all the classes I had taken at OTC. This allowed me to step straight into my junior year at MSU, and straight into my major-specific classes.”

Billy says the most challenging part of his transfer experience was, “Learning MSU’s website and learning Blackboard. In reality, those are small challenges, which are good! It just takes time to get used to it.” Billy expressed love for his time at OTC but says that “I have enjoyed so much being able to get into my major specific classes at MSU” and says that is the most enjoyable part of his transfer experience.

Billy’s advice for a new transfer student is to get involved. He says, “I think getting involved is a great way to ease the newness of transferring to a new school. I was fortunate to be involved with an organization before transferring, and it helped to know that I already knew people.”

Billy would like to use this opportunity to give a shoutout to the people who helped him the most with his transition to MSU: his family and friends (who helped by being supportive), Donna Rebmann (who helped Billy out tremendously), and Steve Fritts (Billy’s first ASL instructor at OTC).
