Transfer Student Spotlight: Tyler Schroeder

October 23, 2024 by Campbell M. Keele

Meet Tyler Schroeder, a transfer student from Ava, MO!

Tyler transferred to Missouri State University from Drury University. Tyler is pursuing the Digital Film & Television Production major at Missouri State University.

Tyler chose to transfer to Missouri State because of the campus and, “one of my best friends goes to Missouri State.”

Tyler says that the most challenging part of the transfer process was being in a new environment where he doesn’t, “know anyone aside from my one friend who goes here.” Getting the opportunity to interact with other students has been the most enjoyable part, with Tyler saying, “the ice cream meetup we did at the beginning of the year” being his favorite event so far.

Tyler would like to take this opportunity to give a shout-out to the person who has supported Tyler the most during the transfer process – his mom! Tyler says, “Thanks, Mom, for helping me pack.”

October 22, 2024 by Campbell M. Keele

Meet Bradley Bateman, a transfer student from Decatur, IL!

Bradley transferred to Missouri State University from Ozarks Tech. Bradley is pursuing the Biology/Wildlife and Fisheries Biology and the Mathematics/Statistics programs at Missouri State University.

When asked why Bradley chose to transfer to Missouri State University, Bradley said, “the ease of transfer from OTC, as well as scholarships and research opportunities.”

Bradley says, “getting to know a new campus was the hardest part of transferring to MSU.” Bradley has enjoyed Missouri State so far, saying that the most enjoyable part of the process has been, “getting to meet a host of new scientists that share my research interests.”

Bradley’s advice for a new transfer student would be to, “meet new people and talk with your professors. You will learn a lot!”

Bradley would like to take this opportunity to give a shout-out to the people who have supported Bradley the most during the transfer process at Missouri State – the faculty and staff. Bradley says, “The administrative faculty have been AMAZING, and they probably don’t get enough praise for the work that they do. I have had several questions about my financial aid and scholarships that the staff have been able to answer and help me make better sense of my financial situation. OFFICE OF FINANCIAL AID ROCKS! Also, Donna Rebmann, the MSU transfer advisor stationed at OTC, was a huge help in making sure my transfer was smooth and stress-free!”

Transfer Student Spotlight: Colorado Quinn

October 22, 2024 by Campbell M. Keele

Meet Colorado Quinn, a transfer student from Willard, MO!

Colorado transferred to Missouri State University from Lindenwood University. Colorado is pursuing the Speech and Theatre Education major at Missouri State University.

When asked why Colorado chose to transfer to Missouri State University, Colorado said, “I decided to change my major from BFA Theatre Performance to Theatre Education and my old school did not have the program. My director from high school was an MSU alum and thought it would be a good fit for me.”

Colorado says that being overwhelmed was the most challenging part of the transfer experience. “There was a lot of information to process, paperwork to file, and people to meet.” Colorado also said that moving was challenging, as Colorado had, “built a life at my old school and I felt like I was starting completely over.” Colorado does feel as though changing majors was the right call, as Colorado, “absolutely loves my major. Teaching is my passion. I’m so thrilled to finally be pursuing it as my career. My practicum teaching has been very fulfilling so far and my classes have all been great.”

Colorado’s advice for a new transfer student would be to, “check on your paperwork often and turn on your MSU email notifications! Communication is very important, especially if you’re not physically in Springfield before the start of the school year.”

Colorado would like to take this opportunity to give a shout-out to the people who have supported Colorado the most during the transfer process as Missouri State – Colorado’s advisors, family, and friends. Colorado says, “My advisors have been helpful for me finding my feet at this school so far. My family and friends have been so supportive throughout this transition period and I’m so thankful for them!”

Transfer Student Spotlight: Mal Grant

October 21, 2024 by Campbell M. Keele

Meet Mal Grant, a transfer student from Nixa, MO!

Mal transferred to Missouri State University from Ozarks Tech. Mal is pursuing the Management & Leadership major at Missouri State University.

When asked why Mal chose to transfer to Missouri State University, Mal said, “I transferred to Missouri State because of my financial situation and family. Originally, I wanted to transfer to a school in Dallas because I have always loved the Dallas area, and I have lived in Southwest Missouri my whole life. However, I kept having doubts about being so far away from my family and I could not support myself financially. I also chose MSU because of the easy transfer process. There was someone always at OTC representing MSU.”

Mal says that there were some challenges in navigating the transfer process, including, “deadlines for different things such as scholarships, registering for classes, and when to buy my parking pass. Another thing that was challenging was figuring out my way through campus and online programs that Missouri State uses such as Brightspace and the websites for registering classes.” Mal says that the people at Missouri State have made the transfer process easier and more enjoyable, stating, “everyone has been really nice and welcoming. I was so worried that I was going to get judged, or people were going to look down at me because I am a transfer student, and I am not totally familiar with Missouri State. However, everyone has been really nice. My professors have been extremely welcoming and helpful.”

Mal’s advice for a new transfer student would be to know that “you are going to be okay. Transferring schools is scary no matter where you are transferring from. I was someone who was very anxious and nervous about transferring. I remember being so scared that I was going to look like an outcast and what people were going to think or say about me. I think transferring is one of those things where it sounds scary, and it might feel scary at first, but you end up feeling fine and liking it!”

Mal would like to take this opportunity give a shout-out to the people who have supported Mal the most during the transfer process at Missouri State – Mal’s parents. “My parents have been so supportive throughout my college journey, especially during my transfer to Missouri State. They have encouraged me to put myself out there more with finding ways to get involved and being bolder to introducing myself to make connections and friends.”

Transfer Student Spotlight: Zackary Collison

October 21, 2024 by Campbell M. Keele

Meet Zackary Collison, a transfer student from Plato, MO!

Zackary transferred to Missouri State University from George Mason University. Zackary is pursuing the Criminology & Criminal Justice major at Missouri State University.

When asked why Zackary chose to transfer to Missouri State University, Zackary said, “I initially chose to transfer to Missouri State University because my family was moving from Virginia to Missouri. However, I was also seeking a school that had more ways for me to get involved. Missouri State has been just that! Since moving, I have become an active member on the MSU Mock Trial team, I am the Transfer Living-Learning Community Resident Assistant in Kentwood, and I am constantly running around campus.”

Zackary’s advice for a new transfer student would be to, “get involved in anything that interests you. There are hundreds of student organizations that are an excellent place for you to explore your passions and to make new friends. Don’t be afraid to try new things and explore. MSU has all sorts of events across campus to interact with others, learn about great MSU traditions, and have fun. Do your best to get out of your comfort zone and talk to at least one person in each of your classes and in your residence hall. The people here are truly some of the kindest, so reach out.”

Zackary would like to take this opportunity to give a shout-out to the people who have supported Zackary the most during the transfer process at Missouri State – Zackary’s family and the faculty at MSU. Zackary says, “I’d like to thank my family for their support. My professors are amazing at pushing me, guiding me, and providing me with resources to accomplish my goals. I’d specifically like to shout out Dr. LaPrade from the Criminology department for coaching our mock trial team and making learning interactive. Caryn Saxon has also been such a positive face of the Criminology department and has helped set me up with a great internship at Greene County Children’s Division. Go Bears!”
