Urban and rural communities are vastly different, but the people at the core remain the same in that they all have endured struggle. The importance of coming together, despite different backgrounds, is more important than ever. Dr. Beth Walker, spoke to this testament, with her dedication and passion for the Public Affairs conference theme.
“My few days in the hospital with my son couldn’t have come at a more poignant time as it emphasized the need and importance of the 2021 Public Affairs theme – Bridging the Divide,” Walker said.
Her application story illustrated the small town struggles being faced by her neighbors, friends and community members. In an effort to recognize urban and rural students, and guide them through their academic careers successfully, Walker noted that each student background faces challenges unique to their demographic.
“Missouri State University is a perfect place to address these challenges and provide unity which is drastically needed. Our teachers connect with students coming from towns with just a few students graduating high school to close to 1000. We must know our students and where they come from and the culture they are leaving behind in order to succeed in producing educated intellectuals who truly appreciate the various differences we all possess,” Walker said.
Walker’s application clearly showcased her commitment to the cause and how she would use the Provost Fellow position for the greater good.
“If selected as Provost Fellow, I will work closely with my fellow faculty and student leaders to find meaningful ways to showcase the challenges we all face and more importantly learn how to have civil discourse with those who share different views. Experiences must be shared in ways that help us picture a different life, to understand how growing up in a city can make a person see the world differently than one who grew up in the country,” Walker said.
The Darr College of Agriculture is proud to have Dr. Beth Walker as a faculty member who reaches out through the University to work towards a better tomorrow for our students. She represents our College as a leader in agriculture and public affairs. Congratulations, Dr. Walker for receiving the honor of the Provost Fellow position for the 2021 Public Affairs Conference.
