Faculty Feature with Agribusiness Professor, Dr. Benjamin M. Onyango

August 5, 2022 by Mackensie Darst

Dr. Benjamin Onyango is a professor within the Agribusiness, Agriculture Education, and Communications department at the Darr College of Agriculture. Onyango teaches agribusiness students the fundamentals of agricultural economics and financing in the classroom setting.

Onyango completed his undergraduate degree at Nairobi University in Kenya. Onyango then traveled to the United States where he graduated from the University of Connecticut, receiving his Ph.D. in agricultural economics in 1999.

As he approached graduation, Onyango heard about the open position at Missouri State University. He knew it was just what he needed for his first job after graduate school.

“It was a perfect fit for my agricultural and resource economics training when coming from a rural background growing up in Africa,” Onyango said.

Onyango has taught at Missouri State University for precisely 23 years. In fall 2022, he will teach Financing Agriculture, Introduction to Agricultural Research Methods, and Statistical Applications in Agriculture. Throughout his professional career, Onyango has performed research in the areas of agricultural risk, food biotechnology, food security and safety, and production and development economics. Onyango brings a unique perspective to the faculty with his rural African background.. He is very passionate about sharing the importance of diversity and inclusivity on campus, which is why he enjoys the New Student Mixer and diversity-focused events.

Onyango recently spent time on sabbatical in his home country of Kenya

When Onyango is not conducting research in economics or facilitating classroom instruction, he can be found enjoying a summer cookout with his friends and family.
