Transferring to the Bears Den

How the Darr College of Agriculture helps transfer students like Braxton Bishop transition successfully to Missouri State.

September 26, 2025 by Strategic Communication

Transferring to a new university is a significant life transition, filled with both excitement and uncertainty.

For Missouri State University sophomore Braxton Bishop, this decision was inspired by his passion for equine science.

“I was drawn to join Missouri State because of its Equestrian Team,” said Bishop. “I’ve always wanted to be a part of a successful equine program.”

Now thriving as an equine science major in Missouri State’s School of Agricultural Science and Conservation, Bishop’s story is a testament to how the right community can make all the difference.

Adjusting to campus life and culture

One of the first hurdles transfer students encounter is adjusting to life on a new campus. Missouri State provides a welcoming environment where students from different backgrounds can feel at home and thrive.

The Darr College of Agriculture ensures a smooth transition with the guidance of readily available faculty, devoted advisors, mentorship opportunities and student-led organizations that help students to integrate into the Missouri State community.

“When I arrived on campus, I knew I wanted to be involved in some of the clubs here at the college,” Bishop said

Academic expectations and opportunities

Transferring into the Darr College of Agriculture presents an opportunity for academic growth and skill development. The college offers a variety of programs, including agribusiness, animal science, environmental plant science and agricultural education.

When students transfer to a new school, in addition to adjusting to new coursework and academic structures, they often face challenges with successfully transferring their credits.

Fortunately, Missouri State has dedicated transfer support staff who assist students to plan their academic journey, ensuring that previous coursework aligns with Missouri State’s graduation requirements.

“A lot of my credits were eligible to be transferred, which took a huge weight off my shoulders. It kept me on track with my degree and allowed me to continue working toward a career in emergency equine medicine,” Bishop said.

Professional development and career preparation

Beyond the classroom, the Darr College of Agriculture is committed to preparing students for future careers through hands-on learning opportunities, internships, industry partnerships and career fairs.

In addition, student organizations, such as the Equestrian Team, Sigma Alpha sorority and many others give students the chance to develop leadership skills, connect with peers and gain industry experience.

“The Equestrian Team has allowed me to develop my skills as a rider and compete against other respectable colleges,” Bishop said.

Campus involvement and community engagement

Being proactive in exploring campus resources, participating in clubs and events, and seeking out support networks can make all the difference in a successful transfer experience.

The college hosts numerous events, including the annual Southwest District FFA Contest. This event enables students to showcase their agricultural knowledge, connect with faculty and contribute to meaningful discussions about the future of agriculture.

Missouri State students are encouraged to volunteer their time as contest moderators.

“I enjoy seeing the FFA kids compete in contests that I helped to organize,” Bishop said. “It allows me to give back to an organization that did so much for me when I was in high school.”

Overcoming challenges and embracing growth

Transferring to Missouri State is a transformative experience that offers academic opportunities and personal growth.

From adjusting to campus life to excelling in academics and building industry connections, Missouri State provides students with the skills and experiences necessary for a successful future.

Transfer students who embrace the transition with determination will find themselves thriving in a community dedicated to agricultural excellence.
