Jina Seo, an assistant professor for the Metals and Jewelry program, will be featured in today’s Faculty Spotlight!
Jina Seo was born in Seoul, South Korea and currently lives in Springfield. She is an artist and educator in the field of Metal and Jewelry. He practice explores the relationships between body, garment, desire, and space. Through the processes of transforming vintage leather gloves into symbolic wearable objects, she creates a visual dialogue that uncovers the hidden intimate and sensual power.
She earned her MFA at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and BFA from the Kookmin University at Seoul, South Korea. She was a recipient of the Fountainhead Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University 2016-2017. She was chosen as one of the SNAG Emerging Artists 2016 at SOFA Chicago and received a Gold Award for the ITAMI International Craft Exhibition in 2010. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including Munich Jewellery Week 2017, Craft Council of British Columbia Gallery; Vancouver, Canada, Brooklyn Metal works, Brooklyn, NY; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; Sung-Gock Gallery, Seoul, Korea, and (AV17) Gallery, Vilnius, Lithuania.
Apart from Jina’s professional career, she is a firm believer in perseverance. Her favorite quote is, “The Mind is Everything. What You Think, You Become,” by the Buddha. She believes that students can achieve anything if they really want to and pursue the goal.
It’s her favorite moment in teaching when students take the challenge and try their best to achieve it. Whether the outcomes are successful or not, the process is so valuable and that’s the moment when students learn the most.
