An ad hoc committee has met to discuss some of the problems facing the Council on General Education and Intercollegiate Programs (CGEIP).
Summation of Problems
Assessment
The takeaway includes the workload for Course Coordinators and CGEIP members being burdensome. Also, annual assessment reports have the feeling of being burdensome and busy work.
Goals and SLOs of General Education
Many felt there were too many goals and SLOs further complicating the process. Should Missouri State University have fewer SLOs?
Membership on CGEIP
More support for CGEIP (e.g., administrative) would make tasks easier and less complicated. The committee also realized CGEIP has continuity problems as it relates to leadership as well as problems with institutional memory. To fix this, members wondered whether a different structure or longer length of tenure on CGEIP would help. They also discussed whether membership should be evenly distributed across the university or, recognizing that some colleges are more dependent on General Education, that membership might be distributed in some pro rata fashion.
Logistics
The members felt that the Assessment Office should be better utilized and that communication to the General Education Course Coordinators needs to be improved. They also discussed how General Education needs better showcasing to our students. Members also wondered if CGEIP should play a more important role in CORE 42 as well as in Dual Enrollment, if members have the data and information they need to do their job, and if CGEIP should evaluate certificate programs.
What is Assessment Doing to Help?
Assessment is working with CGEIP to A) streamline the reporting process and B) help put in place a system that focuses on communication between faculty peers in order to create a culture of assessment for improvement of the general education curriculum.
