Getting Informed about Trauma Informed
Did you know that…
- 60% of adults report that they suffered a childhood traumatic experience?
- Four in ten school aged children report that they have experienced a physical assault, of those, one in 10 resulted in injuries seeking medical treatment.
- Over 60% of youth under age 17 have been exposed to crime, violence and/or abuse either directly or indirectly.
- In many states, anxiety disorder is now considered a “disability” eligible for special education services?
What is the Trauma Informed School Initiative?
It’s no wonder, based on these statistics, that in 2016, the Missouri Legislature passed into law the creation of the Trauma Informed Schools Initiative, authorizing MO DESE to create a website with resources and videos to help inform schools on the need to help students who have suffered from traumatic experiences. At the Agency for Teaching, Leading and Learning, consultant Julie Germann has taken her background as a school administrator, a certified trainer in the work of poverty, and hours of additional research, to create a comprehensive training opportunity for schools to address not only becoming “trauma informed” but also “trauma sensitive”. Information creates the understanding, but knowing how to take that information and put it into action to better understand and serve this ever growing population of students is putting the learning into practice.
