New Orleans Plain Talk about Literacy Conference

February 16, 2022 by Ruben W. Berry

Our Literacy and Special Education Improvement Consultants had the opportunity to attend New Orleans’s Plan Talk about Literacy conference. The conference was rich with information as well as inspiration! These 4 consultants had the pleasure of hearing a keynote from Dr. Stanislas Dehaene, a French neuroscientist that has been a key researcher in the findings of how the brain learns to read. His brain research and findings is the foundation of the Science of Reading. Dr. David Kilpatrick had an eye-opening presentation on embracing the Science of Reading and as he put it “Dragging your Colleagues Along with You.” Dr. David Kilpatrick is the author of The Essentials of Assessing, Preventing and Overcoming Reading Difficulties as well as Equipped for Success and simply a guru in the Science of Reading! This conference also had sessions that were specific towards teaching morphology, creating district literacy plans, identifying students with dyslexia, improving reading comprehension, helping older struggling readers, sound walls and so much more. There was a full buffet of information for our 4 consultants to feast on! Of course, they also enjoyed all the food and flavors that New Orleans had to offer.
