The LGBTQ+ community is often marginalized and not given a voice. Missouri State University strives to make campus a place of inclusion for everyone.
The Office of Multicultural Programs will host multiple events in October to honor LGBTQ+ pride.
“This month will give students the chance to engage with a community often ignored or erased from our knowledge and understandings of history,” said Matthew Banks, coordinator of Multicultural Programs/LGBT student services at MSU.
Oct. 4
Good Queen Fun, Plaster Student Union west ballroom, 7 p.m.
This annual drag show features students and performers from around the Springfield area. Snacks and desserts will be provided.
Oct. 16 and 27
Lunch and Learn, Freudenberger House, 12:30-2 p.m.
Join two open discussions regarding fatphobia and effemiphobia in the LGBTQ+ community Oct. 16 and racism in the LGBTQ+ community Oct. 27.
Oct. 16 and 18
Human rights advocates Tiq and Kim Katrin Milan will speak at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 and 8 p.m. Oct. 18 in the PSU Theater. They will discuss topics such as gender roles, gender identity through specific lenses and expectations in relationships. The Oct. 16 presentation is sponsored by Student Activities Council. The Oct. 18 event is a continuation of the “Shattering the Silences” series presented by the Division for Diversity and Inclusion.
Oct. 23
Assumed Asexuality: Disability in the LGBTQ+ Community, Freudenberger House, 3 p.m.
Join an open discussion about the assumptions made against disabled LGBTQ+ people.
Oct. 25
Acing Intimacy, Freudenberger House, 2 p.m.
Connect with peers in a discussion on defining relationships, intimacy and love for asexual and aromantic people in the LGBTQ+ community.
Oct. 27
A Homecoming weekend LGBTQ Alumni Reception takes place at 5 p.m. in the Davis-Harrington Welcome Center. The LGBTQ Association will sponsor a table at the Welcome Home Party. Registration is required.
Oct. 30
Respectability Politics in Social Activism, Freudenberger House, 5 p.m.
Participate in a discussion about evoking emotion within political and human activism.
