Challenging times highlight opportunities for growth and change.
In Springfield, the decline of traditional media and lack of consistent in-depth public affairs journalism helped inspire community leaders and journalists to create a nonprofit news organization called the Springfield Daily Citizen, Inc.
The Daily Citizen, Inc. will be housed in Missouri State University’s Freudenberger House.
The two organizations signed an agreement today (Oct. 18).
Focus on community needs
More than just another news outlet, the Springfield Daily Citizen, Inc. plans to feature stories on societal issues.
The goal is to:
- Focus on stories from a public affairs lens.
- Encourage discourse and discussion.
- Foster participation that increases quality of life locally.
- Strengthen the keys of democracy.
“Missouri State is such a positive force for good in Springfield, and we are grateful for this important support for our start-up operations,” said David Stoeffler, chief executive officer of the Springfield Daily Citizen, Inc.
With its public affairs focus, the organization aligns with Missouri State’s mission.
“The Springfield Daily Citizen has potential to be an agent for change in our local community,” said Missouri State President Clif Smart. “By partnering with them, we’re investing in a community organization, ensuring progress and standing strong in the principles of our public affairs mission,” Smart said.
Community partnership
More than just an opportunity for the university to support local journalism, the agreement also mentions opportunities for the MSU community to gain experience.
“We are excited about the opportunities to collaborate with faculty, staff and students in journalism, marketing, business, graphic design and other areas – as well as the potential to work with KSMU and KOZK,” Stoeffler said.
The agreement is for three years beginning immediately and comes at no cost to the Springfield Daily Citizen, Inc.
There is an option to renew for two-year terms.
