What does it mean when someone says social “equity” rather than “equality?” Considering these words and their individual meanings is not enough; context must also be taken into account. With social justice endeavors, allies and activists should consider their ultimate goals in order to decide if they are seeking equality or equity, and, especially in this sense, one might be more beneficial than the other. If someone is striving for equality, they want all persons to be treated the same, no matter the circumstance. But this does not necessarily go the distance it needs to – equality assumes that all receiving benefits are already equal and within the same conditions. This is why it is more important to seek equity. Equity strives for fairness while providing everyone the necessary means for equality. An equity-seeking ally identifies a goal and puts in the extra work to get everyone to that goal, no matter the circumstance. Ask yourself what your true goal is when seeking social justice and fairness. Are you striving for equality? Or are you going the distance to achieve equity?
