I am currently 1,302.6 miles away from home. Can you guess where I am from? Miami, Florida! I always get the question “What made you want to come to Missouri?” and my answer is I wanted to grow as an individual, to become more independent, and obviously for the snowy winters.
Coming to college is a large transition for any student, going to college that’s over a thousand miles away from home is even harder. It feels as if you’re the new kid at school, and you don’t know anyone or where anything is. So what do you do? You put on a smile and begin to develop a home away from home. Get involved in a variety of on-campus organizations to help you get connected with the campus as well as other students. Agree to spontaneous adventures to help grow bonds with other students.
Once you’ve made Missouri State your home, never forget your first home miles away. Organize annual face-time calls, holiday visits, and send spontaneous gifts such as care packages. Although you may miss your family, and it feels like you’re missing out on numerous activities back at home, you’ll never be forgotten and always missed too.
Best,
Trenell
