Spotlight on the Student Success Coach Program – Christina Bowles

June 7, 2022 by Priscilla Childress

Take a moment to learn about the Student Success Coach Program facilitated by the Center for Academic Success and Transition. It’s a great program designed to help your student in many different ways!

  1. Tell us about the student success coach program. When was it started? What is its mission? What is the focus?
    1. The Student Success Coach program was developed in 2020 as part of a Title III cooperative grant project to continue to build support systems for first-generation college students. Coaching is a partnership that focuses on the process of learning to be organized, meet deadlines, prioritize projects, and manage time to reach goals. Like an athletic coach, Success Coaches help students become “even better” in their academic and professional skills.  Christina Bowles
  2. Why is this program important to our students? How can it help our students?
    1. Success Coaches are an untapped resource at Missouri State! Many students express concern with time management, study skills, motivation, and accountability.  While advisors can (and often do) assist with these concerns, our Success Coaches are trained in helping our students identify goals they want to accomplish.
  3. Can all MSU students participate in the program?
    1. Yes! All first-generation students are automatically assigned a Success Coach; however, any student can request a Success Coach through The Center for Academic Success and Transition or by visiting our website https://www.missouristate.edu/AcademicSuccess/student-academic-assistance.htm.
  4. What exactly does a Success Coach do?
    1. A Success Coach helps students explore learning styles, habits of working, and current difficulties or barriers to success. Coaches can also help identify strengths and areas of growth, assist with academic goal setting, develop study and time management skills, and connect students to other campus resources as needed.
  5. How do students go about getting a student success coach?
    1. If a student does not already have a Success Coach assigned, they can fill out a referral form on The Center for Academic Success and Transition website. They can also reach out to us directly!
  6. What are the requirements to be a student success coach?
    1. Our Success Coaches are graduate students who have gone through coaching training and receive continual support and professional development through The Center for Academic Success and Transition.
  7. If a student has a coach, will they have that coach for their whole time at MSU or is the program short-term?
    1. For now, Success Coaches are assigned to first-generation students for two years. For students who are referred, a Success Coach is assigned to them until the student decides they no longer need coaching.
  8. Tells us about your role in this program.
    1. I am the new Coordinator of Student Success Coaches. My role is to help recruit, hire, train, and support our coaching staff. I also coach my own students and teach GEP 101: First Year Foundations. I am passionate about student success, and I am excited to see how this program grows!
