New AP style updates: Race-related coverage

September 24, 2020 by Nicki Donnelson

Aerial shot of hands typing on keyboard

Recently, the AP Stylebook updated sections related to race.

A few highlights include:

  • Race-related coverage (revised): Writing about issues involving race calls for thoughtful consideration, precise language, and discussions with others of diverse backgrounds.
  • The racist, racism section added detail on systemic racism, structural racism and institutional racism.
  • The people of color, racial minority section is replaced by separate sections on each term. Among the points: Don’t use BIPOC, BAME or POC unless necessary in a quote; if used in a quote, explain it. Many people object to those terms on varying grounds. Use people of color only when necessary in broad references to multiple races other than white.
  • New entries on Black Lives Matter, Juneteenth and slaves, enslaved people.

There were new entries added (not in the race-related coverage entry)on:

  • Defund: To stop providing or to reduce funds, especially government funds, for a program, group, etc. The term is sometimes misrepresented as abolishing police. Avoid using the term other than in a direct quotation; if used in a quotation, explain and provide detail about what is being sought.
  • Kung Flu: Do not use this racist nickname for COVID-19, including in a direct quotation. Instead, paraphrase and refer to a racist slur for the disease.
  • Looting, looters: Apply the word looters carefully and specifically to those who engage in looting. Avoid the labeling and the stigmatizing of larger communities, groups or all protesters.
  • Riot, unrest, protest, demonstration, uprising, revolt:Use care in deciding which term best applies.

June 27, 2016 by Nicki Donnelson

group students bearwearWe hope you’re excited about the new assets for the brand refresh, and we want you to spread that enthusiasm.

If you participated in the Faculty and Staff Brand Rollout Celebration, you received a bag full of goodies to make the transformation to the new branding much easier. Inside your goody bag, you received the Missouri State Loyalty Card.

How does it work?

On the Missouri State Loyalty Card, there’s a list of 10 fun and easy ways to engage with the new branding. All you need to do is show us proof that you’ve done at least four of them.

Loyalty CardIt’s simple:

  • Snap a picture of you and your coworkers on BearWear Friday (when you’re all decked out in BearWear) and share.
  • Download the new email signature from brand.missouristate.edu and show us.
  • Find someone who is living the public affairs mission, take a picture and share with #CitizenBear.
  • Snap a selfie and share with #GoMaroon.
  • Decorate your office with the SWAG from the Rollout Celebration, and share a pic.

New Student Festival 2014-08-17Why should I participate?

When students flood campus again in the fall, we want them to see how we embody this new brand. Hopefully, they’ll begin to think about what “Make Your Missouri Statement” means to them, and how our public affairs mission fits into their lives at Missouri State.

Plus, if you complete four tasks (and notify us) before Aug. 22, you can win a cool prize!
