Editorial style update: Capital letters in websites, email addresses and hashtags

August 5, 2019 by Michelle S. Rose

Missouri State has adopted new guidelines in the Editorial Style Guide for writing out email addresses, websites and hashtags. We are now using a “camel case” style. In this style, the starting letters for each new word are capitalized. This is more inclusive for all readers/users of our content. It helps with readability and accessibility for those who are using a screen reader. Here is the new information associated with camel case.

Email addresses

In email addresses, the first name and last name, as well as the starting letter for each new word, are capitalized (however, .com, .edu, etc., do not need to be capitalized).

Examples:

  • BoomerBear@MissouriState.edu (not boomerbear@missouristate.edu)
  • Bands@MissouriState.edu
  • CollegeOfEducation@MissouriState.edu

Web addresses

When writing out websites, the starting letter for each new word is capitalized (however, .com, .edu, etc., do not need to be capitalized).

Example: MissouriState.edu NOT missouristate.edu

Hashtags

When writing hashtags, the first letter for each new word is capitalized.

Examples:

  • #GoMaroon
  • #BearWearFriday
  • #MissouriState

New design for university websites

April 17, 2019 by Web Strategy and Development

Missouri State students in computer lab.

We’re excited to announce that Missouri State University websites will soon have a fresh look. The first change comes next week on the homepage.

Our goal: to create an action-oriented experience for future Bears. The new homepage will also showcase bold video, imagery and content elements.

What’s new

All Missouri State University websites hosted in Web Press are moving to new templates.

In late April, we’ll start the transition with the release of a new homepage.

Other highlights on the new homepage include:

  • An admissions-focused layout. We’ve made it easier to apply, visit and donate to Missouri State.
  • A carousel of stories, centered around student success.
  • Upcoming events in an easy-to-read format, with quick links to the full calendar.
  • Bold, impactful stats that detail university accomplishments.

The new templates have other options for design layouts, too.

All MSU Web Press sites will switch to the new templates, and we will release a schedule for this move later in the year.

What’s in the name?

March 11, 2019 by Office of Editorial and Design Services

Missouri State recently strengthen its logo package by registering its primary marks. The move adds a layer of protection to the university’s name and official logos.

Do you see ®?

The Registered symbol ® is now a part of the Missouri State University wordmark and Bear head logo. These updated logos are rolling out in digital, print and wearable examples.

You may access Registered primary and standard unit logos from the brand website.

As you produce office or department collateral items, please use Registered logos. Materials with the ™ symbol are still representative and do not need replacement.

For more information, please contact the editorial and design services office.
