She flew out to Denver and hand delivered her resume to multiple design businesses in the area. Shortly after Kayla was offered a position as an interior designer for a locally owned design firm. After a complete 180, Kayla transitioned from an interior designer to a design coordinator for Oakwood Homes, a national home builder company. She now works along side several departments creating dream homes for residents.
HOW MSU EQUIPPED KAYLA FOR HER CAREER:
“My Construction Management minor really comes in to play at my current job. Being part of a home building company, I am in constant communication with builders and vendors. As well as reading plans and learning a lot about our process.”
ADVICE FOR CURRENT STUDENTS AND RECENT GRADUATES:
“Get out there and start working! There are so many different avenues in both interior design and construction that you can choose to be a part of. Find businesses whose work you love and follow their stories.”
Lessons Learned:
“Learning to be self-sufficient is crucial to separate yourself from others. Give yourself things to do to better yourself in the workplace, practice good habits from the beginning, and set goals for yourself. Be a team player and root for your colleagues to succeed as well as yourself.”
