Alexander Wait lives the public affairs mission on a daily basis through community engagement, cultural competence, and ethical leadership in sustainability on campus and in the community. Alexander has hosted 1st and 5th grade students from Rountree Elementary School in the school’s greenhouse to provide hands on biology and plant physiology lessons, and visited Rountree to teach kindergartners about the climate. As the President of Ozarks New Energy, he organized energy conferences in the area that were open to business owners, educators, and the community. The purpose of Ozarks New Energy is to promote responsible and sustainable energy choices for all of southwest Missouri in an effort to preserve and protect the natural environment for the benefit of the public and to conserve the nation’s unique natural resources. In addition, Repower America, dedicated to revitalizing our economy, strengthening our national security and solving the climate crisis through clean energy, sent Alexander to Washington, D.C. to represent the scientific viewpoint in a delegation of 12 Missourians to lobby for climate change legislation. On campus, he works to incorporate the triple bottom line into all university decisions, facilitates the inclusion of sustainability in the curriculum, and trains students for green jobs on Missouri State’s campus. He co-chairs Green Lunches, which provides an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to discuss sustainability initiatives in a group setting and then take what they learn and apply it in their own lives. These are only a few examples of the time and effort Alexander has given in order to make this world a more sustainable place.
