Dr. Kyoungtae Kim’s lab focuses on a tiny yet powerful agent: yeast.  

Yeast cells have a similar process to human cells. This allows students to learn about the process and explore without putting anyone at risk. 

Several students from Kim’s lab attended the Midwest Yeast Meeting in November at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  

All five students presented.

• Jared Smothers. “Endosome-to-Golgi SNARE mediation of liposome fusion” 
• Vy Nguyen and Mya Ly. “Introduce about the yeast myosin for the traffic bound towards the Trans-Golgi network” 

Each student works with yeast in hopes of understanding diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
