Save the streams one student at a time

GGP students won top prize at stream conference.

The Partnership for River Restoration and Science in the Upper Midwest (PRRSUM) hosted a symposium Feb. 24-27 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

Several Missouri State faculty and students presented the Upper Midwest Stream Restoration Symposium (UMSRS).

  • Toby Dogwiler, department head of GGP, presented “Using drone based imagery in stream restoration: Opportunities, challenges and cautions”
  • Bob Pavlowsky, distinguished professor of geography, presented “Historical mining and watershed-scale sediment contamination in the Galena and Mississippi Rivers, WI-IL: Restoration effectiveness and potential for recovery”
  • Kayla Coonen, a geospatial science graduate student, presented “Nonpoint pollution source modeling in Mineral Fork and Mill Creek watersheds, Washington County, Missouri: Assessment of bank erosion inputs using historical aerial photography and LiDAR”
  • Hannah Adams, a geospatial science graduate student, presented “LiDAR-based approach to assess channel geomorphology in small, agricultural watersheds”

Notables

Coonen and Adams were co-first place away winners for best poster. Each student won $50.

About UMSRS

UMSRS wants to find collaborative solutions to stream restoration and other watershed issues.

There were opportunities for students to listen to regional stream restoration practitioners and network.
