Students in the department of media, journalism and film at Missouri State University won multiple awards at media competitions and film festivals this year and in 2012, including the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) National Festival of Media Arts, 2013 Scriptapalooza International Screenwriting Competition, Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation, L.A. Webfest and Bronze Telly Awards.
“All of this good news gives testimony to the extraordinary education our students are getting here at MSU and the heights to which they can aspire once they leave our classroom,” said Mark Biggs, head of the department of media, journalism and film.
BEA National Festival of Media Arts
Students took home first through third place prizes and excellence awards at the BEA National Festival of Media Arts in Las Vegas, an exhibition that showcases the works of award-winning university faculty and students from around the world. Missouri State students won in short script, interactive multimedia, television script and mixed video categories.
Brook Linder, Tim Saville, Keith Kennedy, Lauren Legate and Nick Bellain won Best of Festival, Dramatic Production for “Ghoul School” in the student video competition. In addition to the award, Best of Festival winners received a cash prize of $1,000.
“Epilogue” the Series
Particular acclaim has been given to the “Epilogue” web series, a collaborative effort by students in the media, journalism and film, theatre and dance, and other departments across the university. The project has received multiple awards from the 2013 Telly Awards and international recognition as an outstanding example of filmmaking from Missouri State students.
“Epilogue’s critical acclaim has validated what we’ve known all along: when Missouri State University’s media and film students and faculty are given a creative opportunity, extraordinary things can, and will, happen,” said Diana Botsford, assistant professor of film. “If anything, the success of this Web series—along with the experiences our students gained in creating it—demonstrates how 21st century education should demand more of our students, because they are clearly up to the challenge.”
