Enactus team sponsors presentation by Rachel Cruze, daughter of financial guru Dave Ramsey
Students got a little help in learning to cool their spending in March as the MSU Enactus team launched the “Ice Your Debt” event on campus.
The team applied for and was awarded a MSU Public Affairs grant in order to fund the project. As part of the two-day event, held March 4 and 5, the team set up information booths on campus to encourage students to ice their debt by distributing baggies with instructions on how to literally freeze their credit cards. The premise behind this plan is that it takes time to thaw-out a credit card before it can be used, giving the user time to really consider their purchase. They also offered free rides via golf cart to students who could correctly answer questions regarding financial literacy (modeled after the TV game show “Cash Cab”).
Among the event’s highlights was an appearance by motivational financial speaker Rachel Cruze, who spoke to approximately 100 students, faculty and staff about the importance of financial responsibility. Growing up as a Ramsey kid, Rachel learned the basic principles of money at an early age. Her parents, Dave and Sharon Ramsey, taught her how to save, spend and give – valuable lessons she uses in everyday life. Rachel says, “I can use the platform my dad built to reach even more teenagers and young adults.”
Enactus advisor Rowena Stone hopes this event makes students more aware of how they spend their money. “With so many students in attendance I know we had an impact on campus, and the Enactus students really benefited from helping others,” Stone says.
