Around the Table:
Tammy Arthaud: Inquired regarding the possibility of implementing a survey on the climate within a department. Discussion indicated that others were also interested, and it was determined that a survey could be developed that would allow us COE to measure the climate within each department in COE. Dean Hough has been conducting similar surveys in the public schools over the last 4 years and will bring a copy of the instruments he has used to the next meeting for review. The plan would be to implement prior to the end of fall 2012 so results could be reviewed and needed changes could be made as early as spring 2013.
Cathy Pearman:
- Major Equipment Requests: Currently have 3 requests on the table. Deadline for submission is October 5th, 2012.
- Tenure and Promotion Guidelines: RFT is in the process of reviewing and revising their T&P Guidelines. Dean Hough indicated that in November we will be having an all-college faculty meeting that will focus on two major items:
- Summary of results from the task forces in place fall 2012
- Re-appointment and Tenure and Promotion Guidelines. Questions include:
- Do we include dispositions? Trying to schedule a meeting with Julie Masterson to discuss this issue – scheduling has been difficult
- We don’t have in our COE policies anything about T&P policy review.
- Chris Craig: Provost committee on T&P review. Charges include reviewing department guidelines and reviewing any decision regarding T&P for a faculty member upon request. This is a 2nd review if there is a confict.
Janice Duncan:
- SPA, on-site review for Greenwood is next year. Last review was 5 years ago. Janice attended a meeting last week regarding new requirements, and indicated accreditation is leaning heavily toward “bean-counting” and it will take up to a year after the visit to get the results. Depending on the perceived value of the review, may be looking at other accrediting agencies for the future.
- Tenure at Greenwood: There was discussion regarding tenure at Greenwood only (departmental-level tenure) vs. University tenure. Dr. Hough believes that we still have an option for University tenure, and there may be differences in individuals that would necessitate departmental vs. University tenure. Greenwood currently has only 3 tenured faculty. Hope to increase that number this year.
Sue George:
- NCATE work groups should be finalized this week and should start meeting the next two weeks.
- We will be getting a new server specifically for accreditation.
- Rejoinder for standard 2 has been submitted by Dr. Craig. We should hear back within 2 months.
- Recommended adding an NCATE update to the November COE All-faculty meeting.
- Important point: Programs should NOT have stopped collecting data after the fall 2011 visit. We are now more than ever focused on “continuing accreditation” both at the state and national level. Assessment should be an on-going process.
Cindy Wilson:
- Next PEC meeting has been moved to Oct. 17th due to the MACTE meeting next week.
Scott:
- MACTE Update: Largest MACTE conference in recent history this year – 176 currently registered. All institutions with Teacher Education programs have joined MACTE this year and all institutions will be represented at the Fall 2012 MACTE conference! We verified that PEC is represented with a voting member on MACTE – Rebecca Woodard. She will also be attending the Deans/Unit Leaders meeting for Dr. Hough who cannot attend.
- BTA Update: MSU sponsoring an MSTA BTA workshop at Willard School District. Work group for BTA is being formed – names of members should be submitted to Dean Hough ASAP and then Scott will schedule first meeting – after MACTE in late October. Will focus discussion on the role of institutions in the collaborative and what topics should be presented to new teachers.
- ID Badges and Lanyards: new ID Badges for students are now for sale, and both “College of Education” and “Professional Education” lanyards are for sale. All items can be purchased by clicking on the “name badges” link on the Field Experiences website.
Jo Agnew-Talley
- ELE Advisory Boads: West Plains and Crowder now forming their own Advisory Boards
- St. Louis and KC Student Teaching Supervisors: Currently hold meetings each semester with David Brown and Jim Jolliff. Jim presents TWS information to students and supervises/scores their TWS. David Brown meets with supervisors and serves as a liaison between supervisors and COE-Student Services. Scott suggested we strengthen the connection between Student Services and the part-time supervisors by having Kim Dubree, Field Experiences Coordinator supervise them. Leadership team agreed to this concept. Sue reminded us that NCATE will want us to demonstrate that we provide students at ALL locations access to the same opportunities and information. It was decided that each semester a team will travel to St. Louis and KC to meet with those students and supervisors. The team will consist of the Director of Student Services, Field Experiences Coordinator and select faculty members representing programs. Faculty will focus the visits with students on TWS, conceptual framework, and dispositional issues. Kim will work with supervisors to provide additional training and support. Scott will work with both groups as needed, and focus on certification information.
Wroy Wroworth:
- Community Schools Update: No information from SPS yet regarding numbers. Will follow up.
- EDT degree in West Plains moving forward.
- Research brief for TEA is ready to distribute.
Dean Hough:
- Everyone is currently working on enrollment projections for fall 2015.
- Dean Hough recently received an invitation from Mary Schied, former BOG member to attend a meeting in SE Missouri to discuss workforce development and the role 2 and 4-year institutions can play in that development. Over 70 individuals from the legislature, higher education, K-12 and private businesses. 35% of High School graduates nationally attend a 2 or 4 year institution. In their 10 county area, only 10% attend college. Nationally, individuals with a 2 or 4 year degree gained jobs. Those with no high school or college degree lost jobs. Need to find a way to train more teachers in Math and Sciences at the undergraduate level in SE Missouri. The Elementary Math Specialist degree was discussed.
- Dept. of Higher Ed will likely not approve any new programs without the following:
- Robust needs assessment
- Collaboration between institutions – both 2 and 4 year.
- Dean Hough will meet with Denise Fredricks and Tammy Janke to discuss ways we could offer Secondary Education content in that area of the state.
Meeting adjourned at 10:30am.
