“BACK to the FUTURE”
Memorial:
MSU and COE lost a dear friend last Friday. Jim Craig was a 1943 graduate of Missouri State Teachers College and manager of the Better Business Bureau for 35 years.
I first met Jim over three decades ago, and we immediately became friends – literally for life. When I needed a motivational speaker for a special event, Jim always accepted . . . and brought the house down. His combination of humor and literary references was enjoyed by thousands during our 2007 commencement when he delivered his Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters acceptance speech.
Jim was the first member or the COE Dean’s Community Advisory Council to donate to the building of our one room schoolhouse. He and his wife Ruth established an Endowment Fund for the College of Education, and he told me on countless occasions, “If there’s ever anything I can do to help the College, just let me know.”
Budget Committee:
Earlier today, the COE Budget Committee approved funding for 9 program support projects from our fund of $78,690.67 as follows:
CEFS ECFD $5,000
RFT Literacy $4,206
CEFS ELE $3,320
CLSE SPE $5,000
CEFS CFD $4,000
CLSE COU $5,000
CLSE EAD $4,988
RFT EDT $2,688
CFFS ELE MS $ 975
Total $35,177
This leaves a balance of $43,513.67 in the program support funds. The budget committee recommended carrying forward this balance until the next round of applications are submitted early next fall.
Homecoming:
MSU Homecoming activities this weekend serve as an opportunity to network with students, alumni, colleagues, and friend. All COE faculty and staff are invited to wear your Bearwear and join in the festivities. The One Room Schoolhouse Scholarship Ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, October 26th. The Golden Bears (alumni who graduated 50 years ago) will be stopping by to watch the ceremony, and David Burton, resident one room schoolhouse expert, will be our guest speaker. On Saturday, October 27, COE will have a tent in Bearfest Village from 9:30 a.m. to game time. We will be providing hamburgers and sides from Backyard Burgers. Student groups will be on hand to supervise games for children. Hope to see you at these events, and hope the football team can make it three in a row!!! Go Bears!!!
Leadership Council:
Minutes to the COE Leadership Council and Budget Committee meetings are posted on my blog. https://blogs.missouristate.edu/coe-deansblog/
This week’s LC will be held at the Library Station on South Campbell where we will meet with the leadership team from Nixa Public Schools.
If you have any news you would like shared via the Dean’s Diary, please feel free to send me blurb. Together we will strive to improve communication and cooperation as we “create a legacy of learning” throughout Southwest Missouri and beyond.
