College of Education | Leadership Council
August 13, 2015 | 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. | Hill Hall 314
Attendees: Tami Arthaud, Donna Breault, Rick Breault, Gilbert Brown, Christine Combs, David Hough, Cathy Pearman, Michele Smith, James Sottile, Kim Dubree, Candace Fairbairn, Joye Norris, James Quick, Teresa Steele, Rose Lee
Joye Norris introduced James Quick who gave a presentation on his company, Academic Partnerships. Joye did talk to Frank Einhellig and Steve Foucart about the company and what they can do. They told her this is a faculty driven decision. The company helps universities take their degrees online. They assist faculty with the process, work with other departments, such as admissions and market the classes. The branding is ours, not theirs. The online classes must be accelerated and taught in 6 to 8 weeks. It was noted that this would not work with our traditional semester classes.
Their company invents the money, 1.6 to 1.8 million, to set everything up. They then take a percentage of the tuition for every student that signs up. They deal with retention as far as contacting students if they see if a student is not participating in the class they signed up for or if they do not re-enroll.
In the Missouri market, Educational Administration is the largest area of growth. The dean will discuss this with faculty to determine whether or not they want to pursue same. If they are interested in pursuing it, he will discuss the matter with the provost to determine whether or not this is a viable option.
Follow-up discussion:
72% of students only take one class at a time
In order to work with them we would need to offer an Educational Administration program. If not they would need to look at other factors first. Joye said the nursing program is looking at this. You can take one course and offer it as two.

MEES Training – Kim Dubree
As of right now, 22 student teacher supervisors have not completed the training. Training will be offered on August 18, 24, and 31 by Suzy Cutbirth. Possibly two more days will be added by Jane Renner. This information will be sent to all that need the training. Kim will also send the names to the appropriate department heads so they can talk to them.

Student Teacher Placement in West Plains – Kim Dubree
Patricia Orchard no longer works at West Plains. She worked with the student teacher supervisors and placed student teachers. Kim is concerned that this could be problematic. Gilbert suggested having a person there to do this since West Plains is part of our system, along with Mountain Grove. We all also need to make sure we communicate course changes to the appropriate people at West Plains. The dean will appoint a task force that will be assigned coming up with a resolution by the end of September.

Certificate in American Education Practices – Tami, Donna, Cathy
Tami, Donna and Cathy met with Jerry Masterson regarding 20 students that are coming to the university from Hainan University. They discussed a 9 hour graduate certificate the students could complete while here. The Fall 2015 pilot program including a Contract Certificate in American Education will consist of 9 hours; SRF 676 and SFR 791. The students would pay tuition. Cathy Pearman will work on this through her department and talk to them tomorrow. Gilbert offered to teach the SRF 676 course. This could be offered every year and possibly to students from other places.
Juan Merez met with the dean regarding having an international class in Mexico. We would send students over there for a period of time possibly during the week of spring break. Jim Baker will cover some of the costs. Gilbert said SA 755 could be used and he would work on it.
The LC agreed to use the certificate as the “generic” document. Cathy Pearman will work on it through her department. She will discuss it with her department tomorrow afternoon.

COE 2015 Annual Report
On Monday, a hard copy with a routing slip will be sent to everyone that has an article in the annual report. Write changes on the document or make a word document and attach it with a note where to replace it. Turn-around time needs to be quick. The dean will be the last person to receive the report.

Around the Table
Candace Fairbairn: Candace met with the pilot program partners in Rogersville. The meeting went well. She meets with Republic School District today.
Donna Breault: Per Course training went well last Saturday. Some of the student teacher supervisors attend.
Chris Combs: They interviewed a candidate for the West Plains advisor position yesterday, which went well.
Tami Arthaud: Tami and Rebecca Smotherman went to the Mountain Grove campus to look at what it would take to establish a counseling clinic there. They would need three rooms, therapy, intake and viewing. Tami and Rebecca will submit a proposal to proceed. The dean brought up that West Plains would like a counseling program. Tami will schedule a visit. The dean is going to call Drew Bennett to discuss where would be the best site for the area for a counseling clinic. The whole area would need to buy in.
Rick Breault: He met with people from The Creamery Arts Center to possibly work with the SWRPD to help schools in the outline regions that do not have a good number of art resources. He is also meeting with faculty from Arts & Letters. Lois Jones is resigning as of October 1. He will see that the paperwork is started. Lois is the compliance consultant and will need to be replaced as soon as possible. She will be able to help some during the transition.
Cathy Pearman: Per an email from outreach, RDG 318 in Lebanon only has three students registered. The class will be offered face to face this semester and will be online starting in spring.
Gilbert Brown: They will be recommending a person for the West Plains position soon.
James Sottile: Babel is down, but we didn’t lose any data. We do not have a back-up server. They are three weeks behind in connecting new computers and data ports.
Dean Hough: Travis will be moving to the front part of 303B. John Reinert will work out of Travis’ old office.
Meeting adjourned at 10:53 a.m.
