College Meeting Rescheduled for Friday, August 19, 2016
We have a new date and location for our College Meeting this fall. Please RSVP to Sharon Lopinot at 6-4680 or sharonlopinot@missouristate.edu by July 15th. The new location will be the Hotel Vandivort Ballroom, 305 E. Walnut Street. We will begin at 8:00 a.m. with breakfast, followed by introductions of new faculty and staff. The president and provost will be in attendance to provide updates. Faculty and staff will present proposals for consideration. A complete agenda should be ready for dissemination later this summer. Lunch will be provided.
The White River Conference Center could only accommodate us on August 17th which overlaps with the Showcase on Teaching & Learning, and campus locations are booked, as well. I trust folk will appreciate this adjustment, along with all the hard work our COE staff do to make events such as this possible.
Child Life Students Present to Greene County Children’s Division
Taylor Clark, Julia Brezany, and Courtney Wilhoit
Cara Smith, CFD Child Life Instructor wanted to share a proud COE student moment. Three child life students presented their final project for CFD 510 to Greene County Children’s Division. They shared resources they created for children in foster care to promote “felt safety,” increase opportunities for positive development and decrease negative effects of stress and trauma. The Children’s Division staff were extremely receptive, as they will be implementing the resources in working with both foster and biological families.
College of Education Living Learning Community
Teacher Education Living-Learning Community
The College of Education has partnered with Residence Life to create a Living Learning Community (LLC). The LLC is designed for first-year students who plan to become teachers. The students live together on a designated residence hall floor and participate in activities designed to foster student relationships with faculty, enhance academic success, develop a strong sense of connection to the community and build a lasting network that helps retain students in the College of Education. There are 48 spaces for students and Residence Life is in the process of filling those spots. http://reslife.missouristate.edu/livinglearning/TeacherEducation.htm
To support the focus of providing educational opportunities to connect LLC students early with the COE the group will be taking a college dedicated GEP101 course as well as an EDC345 course in the fall semester. There will also be tutoring sessions designed to help students prepare for the MOGEA, which they will be taking in the spring semester. These are just a sample of ideas in the works for the LLC and not all activities have been planned. Any input from faculty/staff on what activities would support the LLC students is encouraged!!
The LLC has been paired with an RA who is an Elementary Education major, Rachel Murphy. Rachel is very excited about this partnership and is feverishly coming up with ideas to connect students to the faculty she has encountered in the COE, things she wishes she had known as a first-year COE student, activities that promote academic success and volunteer opportunities that put students in places to give them a taste of the world of education from the eyes of a teacher.
To make our LLC a success we NEED YOUR HELP. We would like COE faculty/staff to become partners with the LLC. You can show up to an event, help plan an event or come up with ideas for ways to maximize the impact of the LLC. To learn more about becoming a partner here is the link to the Residence Life description of partnering with the LLC: http://reslife.missouristate.edu/livinglearning/BecomeAPartner.htm .
The first opportunity to show our incoming freshman how excited we are that they have chosen teaching as their path is the Welcome Social for the LLC. This will be August 19th from 3-5 pm. The students will have just moved into the dorm and the COE will be providing food, ice-breaker activities and an informal way to meet some of the wonderful faculty they will encounter along their journey to becoming a teacher!!

EDUCATION MATTERS
A successful education is something every child deserves.
Was in Jefferson City last Wednesday and was there a bit last week, as well. Multiple groups continue to discuss ways to improve education for all children throughout our state’s 520 plus school districts. Wednesday’s group was the Missouri Network for Transforming Educator Preparation (MoTEP).
On the MoTEP agenda were licensure requirements, program changes such as year-long internships, and data systems to identify student learning issues that need to be addressed during early childhood.
Last week, the Missouri Advisory Board for Educator Preparation (MABEP) met to recommend “cut-scores” on teacher content assessments, known as MoCAs. The idea is to set the bar as high as possible to ensure all teachers have the subject-specific knowledge they need to ensure all their students master all standards in all subjects.
Next week, the State Equity Committees will meet on Monday to develop strategies to address under-represented groups, and the Missouri Council of Education Deans (MCED) will meet on Tuesday to develop a set of performance indicators that will help the State determine how well all these new polices, requirements and assessments are working. Again, the goal of all this work is to help all children succeed in school, work and life. It is a tall order. Just count the number of times I have used the word “all” thus far . . .
Members of the Missouri Legislature have been engaged in serious conversations about ways to allow voter approval at local levels to increase funding for early childhood education. Enabling local communities to increase sales taxes to help families access promising early childhood education programs is key to this approach. Springfield’s “Every Child Promise” is a great example.
Both sides of the “house” across chambers, fiscal conservatives and liberals, are finding champions. Among the many groups at work, our Every Child Promise folk and the legislators supporting the initiative could be the most impactful.
“Every” and “all” are important synonyms. Let’s support them both.

Budget Update
The executive budget committee met on Monday, April 25th, and made the following recommendations:
● a 2 percent across-the-board pay increase
● investment in the third year of the Professor Salary Incentive Program
● $250,000 for cost center heads to provide staff with merit and equity pay increases
● $900,000 for new tenure track faculty lines
President Smart shared this information with the campus community in the May 3rd issue of “Inside Missouri State.” Provost Einhellig shared with deans on April 27th the proposed allotments each academic unit could expect to receive for FY17 pertaining to staff and faculty. Dean Hough will share specific details with the COE Budget Committee, FAC, and LC as soon as all that information is verified and then with the entire COE community via a future Post. Dean Hough shared his notes from the April 27th meeting with the LC on May 5th. In sum, COE’s share of new revenue for new faculty positions should be approximately 14.9% of the $900,000 allotment. Staff equity adjustment funds for COE totaled $6,815.34. Dean Hough will review details with the newly formed Staff Advisory Council during its inaugural meeting in June.
