3-Minute Thesis Presentations
Dr. Tom Tomasi, Assoc. Dean, Graduate College wants to give a heads-up reminder they will be holding the Graduate College 3MT competition later this fall, likely Friday evening Nov 4, but are in the process of polling graduate program directors. Be reminded that, despite the name of the completion, this is for any graduate research project, thesis or not.
More details will be available later, but each college will get a minimum number of slots, but those with more participating graduate students will get more.
They are leaving it up to each college to determine how they select their top presenters. However, it is suggested to hold your own competition the week (or so) prior to theirs. This allows you to give your own awards, and you can set your own process, as to how the presenters get into your college-level competition. The only criteria are the 3-min time limit, one PP slide of information (name, program, and talk title can be on a second slide), and judging is not based on any Q & A that you might have.
There is additional information on their 3MT webpage: http://graduate.missouristate.edu/currentstudents/265901.htm
You can also email Tom if you have any questions: tomtomasi@missouristate.edu
National – State – Local Connections
From The Renaissance Group: This year’s TECSCU meeting will open with “. . . ‘A National Conversation Between Teachers and Teacher Educators,’ will bring practicing teachers who are leaders of national organizations and deans of teacher education programs to open the discussion about the realities of teaching and teacher preparation. Movements to reform schools, teaching, and teacher preparation have led to new regulations, laws, organizations and agencies often without teachers and teacher educators at the table. This discussion brings us all to (sic) the same table.”
In addition, the conversation “. . . will continue . . . with a panel consisting of stakeholders who are engaged in responding to legislative action mandating lab schools in North Carolina. The session titled, Tensions, Pitfalls, and Opportunities, will continue the focus on the realities of teacher preparation and school-university partnerships in the policy-making context that is occurring across the country while highlighting critical principles-in-action that can lead to success.
. . . The culmination of what we have learned from each other, the commitments that have been made, and the professional energy that has been generated will be evident in the final day’s session with representatives driving the focus on the future of educator preparation.”
Given national conversations, meetings, and conferences addressing issues similar to the above, Dean Hough convened representatives from Missouri Southern State University, Crowder Community College, Southwest Baptist University, College of the Ozarks, Drury University, Evangel University, Ozarks Technical Community College, and MSU – West Plains to review Missouri’s involvement in the Council of Chief State School Officers’ Network for Transforming Educator Preparation. Missouri has a State Team consisting of Paul Katnik, David, Jim Masters, Gena McClusky, Rusty Munhollen, Linda Keiser, and Pete Kelly who attend meetings with 12 other states to discuss ways to enhance teacher preparation. After these meetings, Missouri’s State Team meets with the Missouri Network for Transforming Educator Preparation (MoTEP). MoTEP is comprised of about 40 educators in various roles, i.e., P-12 classroom teachers, principals, superintendents, association presidents, higher education and DESE personnel. MoTEP has established four or five goals, one of which is to update the APR (which has been done) and another is to improve field & clinical experiences.
As a starting point for improving field and clinical placements, MoTEP is hosting a series of Master Teacher Regional Summits. The purpose of the summits is to collect information from the regions’ best cooperating teachers (AKA Master Teachers) on ways to improve the student teaching experience.
The MSU COE Elementary Education Program Internship Academy is becoming recognized as a model worthy of expansion across the State. DESE personnel are now beginning to focus attention on funding streams that can extend and expand this program. In sum, national agendas impact local practice, and MSU’s COE has become a leader. Thanks to all who are working hard to move the national, state, and local reform initiatives forward!!!
Southwest Missouri Regional Master Teacher Summit
The College is working in partnership with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Southwest Regional Professional Development Center, the Southwest Center for Educational Excellence, and area higher education representatives from Baptist Bible College, Missouri Southern State University, Drury University, Evangel University, College of the Ozarks, Crowder Community College, and Ozarks Technical Community College to host the Southwest Missouri Master Teacher Regional Summit. The Summit is one of nine that will be held across the State by other partnership groups.
The Southwest partnership has selected Thursday, October 6, 2016, as its summit date, and the location will be Bass Pro Shops’ John A. & Genny Morris Conservation Center, 600 West Sunshine in Springfield. The purpose of the Summit is to collect information from the regions’ best cooperating teachers on ways to improve the student teaching process. Colleges and Universities in Southwest Missouri are invited to submit names of outstanding cooperating teachers for review by Southwest Missouri partnership representatives. The top 21 teachers will receive an invitation to participate. If MSU faculty would like to nominate an outstanding cooperating teacher for this summit, please submit the following information to Dr. Russ Brock, Coordinator of Programs for the Southwest Regional Professional Development Center no later than Friday, September 2, 2016: cooperating teacher’s name, subject and grade level(s), school and district name. Dr. Brock will contact principals to validate nominees, and invitations will be sent from DESE sometime after September 9, 2016.
Keep Calm and Bearfest On,
