June 1, 2017
9:00 – 10:00 a.m. — PCOB 106
Notes
In attendance: David Hough, Janice Duncan, Cathy Pearman, James Satterfield, Rose Lee
Dean Hough has recommended a Vision Committee be formed at Greenwood to examine ways the school is or can become distinctive from public, private, parochial, charter, and magnet schools. As a result, Dr. Duncan has asked to have faculty representation from the College to join the group she has already identified from GLS to serve on the Vision Committee. After a discussion, department heads agreed to ask a faculty member from each department to participate. The Dean will email any faculty recommended by departments to see if they are interested in serving on the Vision Committee.
Dean Hough has reviewed the 2016-2017 COE Annual Report as submitted by departments, GLS, and the CDC. He has emailed the report to the Provost. The separate department/unit documents will be posted under “Annual Reports” on the COE webpage. Sruthi (COE graduate assistant) will contact the department heads and directors regarding posting their document on their web page. The COE Three-Year Strategic Plan 2017 – 2020 is ready to send to printing services. The “New Faculty Appointments Academic Year 2014-2018” document is almost completed. After the dean adds an introduction, Rose will email the next draft to everyone for one final look before being printed.
The dean requested department heads, directors, and the associate deans to write up a list of organizations/project/things they work on that are not related to their COE job. This will be discussed in more detail in August.
The Bears of Distinction Dinner/Awards Ceremony is June 24, 6:00 p.m., PSU Ballroom. Margie Vandeven is receiving the Outstanding Alumni Award. The Dean is hosting for two tables of eight. He is in the process of working with Lori Fan to invite guests. If all of the seats are not filled, LC members are welcome to attend. An email will be sent out if this happens. There are other events Friday night and Saturday that they are welcome to attend.
Dean Hough distributed the 2017-2018 Academic Calendar. Department Heads were asked to email the dean, copy Sharon and Rose, by next Friday, June 9th, the names of faculty who will be applying for tenure and/or promotion next fall. Janice submitted names for Greenwood, but will double check.
The Dean discussed continuation of the R/P/T Seminars and asked for input regarding the Mentor / Leadership Seminars to be kicked-off this summer. The purpose of the Mentor/Leadership Seminars is to share inter-departmental guidelines, “binder” representations, and opinions as well as University processes, policies, and requirements. Mentor roles and responsibilities, as well as departmental leadership in the management of the RP&T processes, will also be a component. COE would like to kick-off the seminars this summer and hold monthly sessions August – December 2017. Dean Hough would like to include RP&T chairs, mentors, and department heads, including GLS. A question was raised regarding the status of the mentoring document the FAC sub-committee had developed, as well as the FAC’s draft “Code of Ethics.” Formal and informal mentoring were discussed, and Dean Hough suggested the group should consult the Faculty Handbook to determine what is required in terms of ensuring each new faculty member has a mentor. CEFS may need to have mentors from RFT and/or CLSE, due to the disproportionate number of assistant professors to associate and full professors now in their department. There was a discussion on how to get more people to mentor. The Hough Post will go out next week. The dean agreed to provide information in that communique on the seminars and add a sentence that if anyone who is not currently a mentor, but would be interested in being one, should email him and copy Sharon.

Bear Up will be held June 11 – 16. There are four students from Pattonville and approximately ten coming from Riverview Gardens. The students are mostly sophomores and juniors. The weeklong program will introduce students to our campus, college and offices that can assist them. They will stay in dorms and everything except for personal items will be paid for.
Janice Duncan
They had their first international Skype with a student in the Netherlands. One hundred percent of the students that just graduated will attend college. Two will be in Scotland and one Switzerland.
