Leadership Council
July 20, 2017
9:00 – 10:30 a.m. PCOB 127
NOTES
Attendees: David Hough, Gilbert Brown, Denise Cunningham, Janice Duncan, Karen Engler, Cathy Pearman, James Satterfield, Kim Dubree, Tom Johnson, Margie Stewart, Elizabeth Strong
Sharon introduced Tom Johnson, Director of Safety and Transportation. Tom is in his second year at this position. He wanted to discuss our transition to downtown and Glen Isle. Call his office at 417-836-5509 if:
- You would like someone to walk you to your vehicle
- If you see something that looks out of place or unsafe
- You are locked out of your building/office
- You need your car jump started
If someone is injured or there is any type of emergency, call 911. His department is starting a new active shooter training called Run, Hide, Fight. They could conduct a thirty-minute presentation at departmental meetings if interested. The dean has had a number of faculties say they feel unsafe in the evenings. The dean asked if the daytime security guard could work evenings. Janice has classrooms available at Greenwood for night classes if interested. James Satterfield is going to have his administrative assistant fax their night schedule to Safety and Transportation each semester so there can be more patrolling. Faculty and students should walk in groups to their vehicles or call and have an officer come down and walk with them. Signs/posters regarding this information should be posted throughout the PCOB building along with the phone number for Safety and Transportation. James indicated they do not normally have people that do not work in PCOB in the building except occasionally during extreme hot or cold weather. Security should be at PCOB to lock all entry doors after classes are over. There was a discussion on whether or not keyless entry could be installed. Tom will have his lieutenant conduct a safety assessment of the building and will talk to the city officer he works with. Tom finished with letting everyone know to call or email him at tomjohnson@missouristate.edu with any concerns.
Margie Stewart, Career Resources Specialist at the MSU Career Center was introduced. Margie is assigned to work with the College of Education. She handed out information on numerous events the Career Center be having including Resume Madness, Mock Interview Day and the Career Expo. Due to renovations, Hill Hall cannot be used this year. It was recommended that she have Resume Madness at PSU. Dean Hough suggested she attend periodically, or monthly, LC meetings to discuss upcoming events and how the COE can be more involved.
Elizabeth Strong, Director, Study Away Programs, was next to talk about how COE students and faculty have been involved in study away programs this past year and how to be more involved for the upcoming school year. Handouts with various information on study away programs were given to everyone. Elizabeth said they are currently talking to SOAR students, which is going very well. This year they will have someone from Mobility International talk to faculty, staff and students with disabilities to show how a study away program could work for them. Short-term study away programs are on the rise. There is a $5,000 study away scholarship that when the college matches the amount, is available for COE students to apply for. There are also other scholarships students can be directed to. There is always an orientation before students go out of the country to help students be more orientated and know what to expect. Elizabeth is willing to attend COE classes to talk to the students and faculty regarding what is involved. The dean said that Gilbert Brown is the COE point person to increase the number of underrepresented students in our college and that Gilbert will work with Elizabeth and the study away program. The dean asked if everyone thought it would be a good idea to pursue a study away (two or four weeks) for students to complete their student teaching. Students would have their first twelve weeks in Springfield or the area and then the option of a two or four-week student teaching experience in the states or overseas. They could possibly work with Montgomery Alabama or Pine Bluff Arkansas. There would need to be pre-travel meetings with students to discuss what to expect, what they will gain from the experience, how to be engaged, a debriefing and a presentation when finished. They could possibly include course work credit for certain sessions such as RDG 345. Elizabeth asked the dean, or Gilbert, to suggest two to three countries where student teachers could go. She would then work on proposals with affiliate providers and present the information to LC. Gilbert will work with her on this.
Dean Hough informed members that he would be working as the acting department head for RFT until something else could be figured out. Besides his regular duties, Gilbert is going to work on expanding Chinese initiatives and study away programs. The dean would like to meet with RFT faculty and staff as soon as possible to discuss the ongoing search process for the department head position.
The Mentor Leadership Seminar Retreat will be held on August 14, 2017, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., at the Hotel Vandivort Ballroom. The provost and deputy provost will attend. Dean Hough would like to see department heads and chairs for the department P/T committees attend, along with anyone mentoring faculty, but said no one is required to be there. RFT and CLSE still have a faculty member with no mentor. Janice said her faculty mentors are not sure if they need to be at the seminar since not all topics apply to them. The dean will look at the series of sessions to see what would be pertinent for Greenwood faculty. Janice said she could send a few people who could then talk to the other mentors at Greenwood. She will discuss options with the dean.
The COE College Meeting will be on August 18, 2017, 8:00 – 11:30 a.m., at the PSU West Ballroom. The Faculty Advisory Council will have a “Getting to Know Your Colleagues” activity for faculty/staff. A continental breakfast will be available. President Smart will provide University updates and answer questions about the Hill Hall renovation.
