Attendees: David Hough, Russ Brock, Gilbert Brown, Denise Cunningham, Kim Dubree, Janice Duncan, Karen Engler, Juli Panza, James Satterfield, Emmett Sawyer, James Sottile, Jessica Bendure, Jef Cornelius-White, Teresa Steele
Dean Hough started the meeting with going around the table.
Jessica Bendure, Professional Ed Advisor, was invited to the meeting to discuss information on MOGEA Practice Test Data from 2016-17. Last year was the first year for the Education Living/Learning Community on campus. The idea behind LLC is for students to be with other students that want to pursue the same area and to get support from faculty and staff.
- 11 out of the 22 students took the MOGEA and passed all sections
- 9 of the 11 took the practice exam
- 11 out of the 22 students have not taken the MOGEA
- 9 of the 11 who did not take the exam took the practice exam
- -100% of students who took the MOGEA passed all sections the first time regardless if they took the practice exam or not
Dean Hough told the group that COE will make a presentation to the BOG at the October meeting. The LC recommended highlighting COE education programs with high marks on the APR, the One Missouri initiative that includes both urban and rural components, the Internship Academy, and BearPOWER. Dean Hough has been tasked with developing an executive summary and PowerPoint presentation for the meeting.
Emmett Sawyer has a couple of searches going on in RFT; one is for the department head. Dean Hough asked Emmett to work with RFT faculty at their next meeting to gain input on a new dept. head search committee chair, as Becky Swearingen has expressed a desire to step aside. Dean Hough noted that Becky has done a good job and the committee/department was able to identify good candidates, but top choices declined offers. The chair should be at the rank of professor and (ideally) a current or former department head. Dean Hough would prefer a volunteer from RFT. He will announce the appointment of a chair before the end of September.
Gilbert discussed the China Initiatives. He read part of an email regarding students from China that came to our campus. They thought everything went very well. Tami is planning a Study Away Program to China. Gilbert also distributed an article from the Kansas City Star regarding for the first time in the last five years, our university was noted as the number 1 choice among students who took the ACT exam. The dean had been at a few meetings regarding this information and said that we now have a higher percentage of students but do not have data showing who of those were going to the University of MO-Columbia. They discussed that they did not know where all of the students who changed their minds about going there are enrolled, but not coming here. This goes for transfer students, too. We need to look at data on students coming in at the program level regarding ACT scores, class ranking and are they enrolling in our programs. He asked department heads to work with their program coordinators to start collecting data on quality of students enrolling in their programs (pass rate, MoPTA, MOGEA). He may ask for this information at the next LC. The next thing to look at is program completers.
Regarding the One Missouri Initiative, Gilbert has some tentative meetings with superintendents in the St. Louis and Kansas City area. He is working on scheduling a meeting with the superintendent of River View Gardens. Whereas we are focusing on recruiting students for our education programs, Emmett brought up that when recruiting students, we should also help students that want to pursue other degrees rather than education. Let them know about other programs if asked and encourage them to attend our university. That way we are recruiting for the entire university. Dean Hough stressed that we need to get the message across to make teaching attractive and that it is a good career. The message is that we can give them a good education. Counselors in the schools we work with also need to encourage this.
Emmett suggested we have an Education Urban Center in the St. Louis and/or Kansas City areas to recruit students to teach. A number of students may want to stay in their areas rather than travel to Springfield.
James Satterfield had a number of students call with specific inquiries into all of their programs this week. His program coordinators are working well with potential students. James also had an inquiry from a student currently pursuing a degree in a program from another college.
Russ Brock informed everyone that DESE awarded them the Consolidated Contract, which will be used to support programs.
Denise received notice that their special education matrix was approved by DESE. They are in the process of working on two grants with the Darr Family. She is waiting to hear about the CFD in-service and coursework for their students in Camdenton.
The dean has a meeting today to discuss an Education Rural Center in West Plains. This was discussed with the group last week. He needs to get a location, talk to West Plains people and then send a proposal forward for consideration of University funding. LC agreed that the dean should put information about the proposal in the Hough Post at any time.
James Sottile noted that we will need to review 21 programs given the CAEP option of “review with feedback” for the CAEP site visit. He suggested that the MSU-EPP program review process be similar regarding scope and sequence. He will be e-mailing people to get their feedback related to the list of programs that need to be reviewed to ensure accuracy. James also handed out a survey from the Office of Social and Economic Data Analysis regarding the follow-up survey of MSU first year teachers. The responses were positive.
Karen Engler attended an EDC class and worked with students pursuing middle school/high school education degrees and asked them questions regarding did they think our university is working well with them and what could be done better. There are some glitches when students transition to us. She will be sharing this data with us. Karen will meet with all deans to help them understand the gaps.
Dean Hough met with the Faculty Advisory Council yesterday. One of their topics was the 120 vs. 125 minimum credits for a degree. Jef Cornelius-White is on the Faculty Senate committee currently working on this. He gave everyone a copy of the committee’s charge. He had some concerns that this could have a large impact on the budget, but could also increase revenue. A discussion followed. Approximately 75% of the programs can move to 120 hours without harming the program. A concern for our college is that we have a number of general ed courses students need to take before starting their program. This increases hours, which would increase the number they need to graduate. We could propose more gen ed courses be tied to our programs. It was also discussed what our peers are doing regarding this. Jef said it would be helpful to have a table with this information. It is believed that most are at 123/120 hours. Jef needs to recommend that faculty give due consideration to general ed courses requested to be added to COE programs. A suggestion was made to have more frontload in GEP100 and SOAR to help students in deciding their major earlier rather than waiting until their sophomore/junior years. It would be good to determine how many developmental education students we have coming in and why they would need to take more gen ed courses.
Teresa Steele will forward an email to everyone regarding Equipment Requests for FY2018. The funds are intended to support major teaching and research equipment needs. Classroom upgrades or computers should not be submitted. She needs this information emailed to her by September 29.
COE has a table for ten at the Community Partnership 2017 Annual Meeting, September 25, 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The following people will attend:
Janice Duncan, James Satterfield, Kim Dubree, Juli Panza, possibly Jennifer Rojas-McWhinney, Russ Brock and Karen Engler. Janice will work on finding more people to attend.
Dean Hough asked Gilbert to decide on whether to keep or disband the COE Marketing and Recruitment Committee.
Meeting adjourned at 10:40 a.m.
