Missouri State University students Sean Lynch and Ben Gratza came to the meeting to promote the Dr. Michael N. Compton Public Affairs Contest, which is in conjunction with the 2018 Spring Public Affairs Conference. The contest is sponsored by the Institute for the Development of Ethics and Leadership, a non-profit organization created by alumni of the MSU Chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity. The winner of the essay receives $500 and an additional $500 for the non-profit organization of their choice. More information will be emailed in January. The dean will see that the information goes out in The Hough Post.
Rose has been working with department heads and associate deans on office assignments for the renovated Hill Hall. We do not have enough offices available for COE faculty/staff. She was given names of faculty/staff that will need an office.
Faculty Advisory Council met yesterday and approved the COE Travel Policy. It is posted on the COE website. Faculty/staff will be reimbursed for the lowest cost among airfare, rental vehicle, or personal vehicle.
Denise Cunningham
CEFS was awarded a grant for one million dollars for five years for the Every Child’s Promise Project. CPO is the fiscal agent. The funds are from the DARR Family Foundation. Former student, Joann Barnett, received the Distinguished Thesis Award.
James Satterfield
Drs. Linda Garrison-Kane and Megan Boyle were awarded $5,000 from the Graduate College to develop a marketing and recruitment plan for SPE. The award will be matched by the college.
Emmett Sawyer
Drs. Kimberly Stormer and Ching-Wen Change also received the $5,000 award for recruitment. This will also be matched by the college. Kimberly has also put together an equipment packet for her classroom students to use through a $5,000 grant she received for Chrome Books. This will allow them to work with Springfield Public School programs.
Janice Duncan
Greenwood I-20 students from Korea, Vietnam and China showed a PowerPoint to kindergarten students about holidays in their countries. The students enjoyed watching and talking about it.
Dean Hough was given the COE report (which was distributed) on COE retention, six-year graduation rates, degrees awarded and student credit hours at his ALC meeting. Everyone needs to look at it and give it some consideration. This will be number one on the next agenda for LC. Department Heads were asked to look at the data and determine what is most important for their department and what they are going to do. Regarding ARGOS reports, the dean asked if it would be good to have someone from Institutional Research at an LC meeting to show how to run these reports. Everyone agreed it would. Sharon will contact them for a future meeting. It will be scheduled in a computer lab.
The next LC meeting will also include a discussion on Task Stream and how we can get everyone to use it regarding transition points. Karen mentioned there is a template available in Task Stream.
Regarding trying to find out why students have dropped from some of our programs, Emmett is looking at MAT students. Some reasons are legitimate, some are unable to reach. It is very hard to try to bring students back.
Dean Hough said Western Governors developed a program to help people complete their degrees. The problem with our university is that the public has a general idea that we do not care about students that drop out and that we only care about ourselves. The public opinion about Higher Education is very negative.
President Smart is having a retreat on Monday with deans and other administrators. The discussions will include what is being done regarding the action plan, how to increase enrollment, retain students and track them in the work force. The dean said we do not have control on some of the topics.
Around the Table
Janice Duncan
The GLS Visioning Task Force met Monday and given their charge and background information on Greenwood. They will be working on a document regarding what Greenwood does that is different from all other schools, public and private. Ron Snodgrass is in the process of emailing their teachers to gather information. Dean Hough mentioned that Greenwood’s plan to balance their deficit would be discussed at the next Board of Governors meeting. The boys’ basketball team was undefeated. Their Spanish team took first place in competitions in the area. It included poems, dancing, singing and academics.
James Satterfield
James and Nate Quinn talked on radio station 98.7 about athletics in general. They discussed graduation, expectations and the effects of social media. Their department is working on a search for an EDD program faculty member. James said the RFT department head position is posted. Everyone needs to reach out and let people know.
Denise Cunningham
They completed a search for Early Childhood and are in the process of completing paperwork. They received major equipment funding from the Provost for a 3-D printer. Starting this week, Denise takes a new faculty member to lunch or one-on-one meeting. Yesterday she was in Columbia for the MSTA Conference in Columbia. It was attended by high school students involved in Future Teachers of America. Their booth was the most popular. It was an excellent place to talk to students from rural areas.
Karen Engler
She is working with Emmett to get through RFT overrides. She answered yes when asked if COE students that are non-completers are on the APR. Karen said we should not count them in our report, but we do.
Dean Hough
Emmett is chairing a search for a part-time Director of School Community Partnerships. It will be thirty hours with benefits. He will send Emmett the list of committee members today.
The meeting adjourned at 10:35 a.m.
