Early Childhood Education and Literacy Initiative Grant…
The Darr Family Foundation along with the Community Foundation of the Ozarks and the Musgrave Foundation recently awarded an Early Childhood Education and Literacy Initiative grant to the Community Partnership of the Ozarks and their collaborative partners. This collaborative group includes Dr. Denise Cunningham and Dr. Sascha Mowrey, both of the Childhood Education and Family Studies Department, and the MSU Child Development Center. The five-year project aims to improve the quality of early childhood care and education and thereby improve school readiness and early literacy in Springfield. Funding will be used to bring Conscious Discipline socio-emotional development training and materials to the Springfield community. In the initial years, teachers and leaders in five high needs public schools, private childcare centers, and Head Start centers, as well as local university leaders and pre-service teachers in Springfield will participate. Throughout the five years, shared learning networks will bring leaders together across sites to support the development of healthy and safe places for young children to learn and play in Springfield.
Greenwood High School Students Interact with Kindergarten Students
Dr. Janice Duncan, Director of the Greenwood Laboratory School, reported that three of Greenwood’s Asian high school students taught kindergarten students about holidays in their home country. Groups of two or three high school students developed power points to show the kindergarten students pictures depicting holidays in China, Vietnam and Korea. Both sets of students enjoyed the activity and learned from it. More interaction of upper grade classes with younger Greenwood students is happening this year.
Update on David Goodwin, RFT Associate Professor
David Goodwin, RFT Associate Professor, experienced what appeared to be a stroke Wednesday, November 8, 2017, after teaching his evening course. Fortunately, someone on the parking lot saw his distress and called emergency services. David has been in the hospital since. He cannot speak, but it is evident that he understands when talked to by visitors. Deborah, David’s wife, and Jenna, David’s daughter, expressed their appreciation for all the visits and prayers for David and the family. David’s classes have been covered, and RFT faculty have stepped forward to offer their support to the family and to the instructor taking over the classes. We want to wish him the very best for a full, quick recovery.
Keep Calm and Fall Semester On,
