In attendance: David Hough, Russ Brock, Gilbert Brown, Kim Dubree, Janice Duncan, James Satterfield, Emmett Sawyer, James Sottile, Ximena Uribe-Zarain, Sharon Lopinot
Kim Dubree discussed a process, Request Re-evaluation of Undergraduate Transfer of Credit, regarding the process and procedures if a student transfers in and what to do if classes they took are not in our matrixes. We did not have a formal process to follow prior to this. The request was approved and will be posted on the web. The document will be titled “Request Re-evaluation of Undergraduate Transfer of Credit Guidelines and Procedures”.
Emmett reported that there are five applications for the Director, School and Community Partnerships opening. The search committee will meet next week. James Satterfield reported that two candidates are being brought in to interview for the Department Head, RFT position. They also have candidates interviewing for the CLSE EDD position this and next week. The dean reported that Denise Cunningham has no current searches but is losing four faculty; one assistant professor and three clinicals. The dean will discuss this with the budget committee tomorrow. He will work with Denise on a funding plan for the assistant professor and one clinical. There is no guarantee that positions will be approved at the higher level due to the budget cuts.
COE Commencement will be at 5:00 p.m. on May 18, 2018. A Graduation Reception will be from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. the same day in the PSU Ballroom.
The Golden Thread meeting will be February 6, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., PCOB 209. Paul Katnik will be invited. This meeting has to do with a project the Dean is working on with Pete Herschend regarding a profile for future teachers. An assessment will be developed for high school juniors to see if they have characteristics to be a good teacher.
James Sottile is having Leslie process MACTE memberships for himself, Ximena, Travis, and Kim. They will also be registered for the MACTE conference March 26 – 27. Cathy Pearman is on the MACTE board. James also mentioned he and Kim were invited to be on the APR Combined MEES committee.
Dr. Ximena Uribe-Zarain distributed and discussed a student teaching exit survey report generated from a survey sent out last semester through Taskstream. The LC members discussed how the data Dr. Uribe-Zarain presented is related to the CAEP Standards 1-5 with a discussion centered around Standard 4- Student Impact. The goal will be for Program Coordinators, using Taskstream, to generate and analyze their program data and discuss such data with their program faculty. Ximena presented a section of the information at the Fall 2017 MACTE Conference and will create a Research Brief for the CAEP self-study report. A question was asked if a follow-up survey could be sent to second and third year teachers. Ximena responded that the response rate is low due to the fact that most of the former students no longer use their MSU email and they have no way to contact them.
Gilbert discussed the strategic partnership our college has formed with Pattonville High School. Denise Cunningham is meeting with the counselor and others there today regarding the possibility of a student internship program there next year. The counselor informed Gilbert there are about 15 students interested in our summer program, Bear Partnership. Gilbert would also like to get a partnership started with the Kansas City area.
James Satterfield handed out information regarding students taking the Counselor Preparation Compression Examination. The pass rate is 100%.
Dean Hough reminded everyone that the Notes on Action Plan for 2017-18 is the University’s plan and he is asked periodically to write up information pertaining to it for the Provost. Every unit needs to look at items in the plan regarding what you can address and document it. This document ties in to our college plan.
Around the Table
Russ Brock
Russ provided information on how to sign up to be on the distribution list for MoTEP. There are currently 25 schools across the Missouri area that have a four-day week. His group is working on planning Friday workshops for them. There is a lot of potential. They could use Zoom, or host the workshops at one of the schools in an area where others could attend.
Janice Duncan
There are five MSU classes taught at Greenwood at night and a few during the day. She asked for anyone involved in interviewing for new faculty/staff to let them know about Greenwood. Practicums are starting. They have 55 students to work with. Last semester they had 80. There are ten new students starting. Coach Taylor is close to his 500th win.
Kim Dubree
The new process for student teaching applications is now being used. Program Coordinators will be able to look at their list of students that have applied and review and approve them.
James Sottile
Department Heads need to plan for technologies in the renovated Hill Hall classrooms. He was asked if the new computer rooms in Hill Hall could have Zoom technology. James is working with Brian Leas to determine the cost and scheduling of a room if it has Zoom technologies.
Emmett Sawyer
There is a MOCA issue. Kim met a couple of people who were substituting who had other degrees and mentioned they may want to pursue teaching. Kim mentioned the MAT Program. In order for the program to survive something needs to be worked out with DESE as far as the extra requirements. They are working on the dyslexia certificate for public school teachers. It will possibly involve 15 graduate level hours. Kayla Lewis is looking at other universities that are doing something similar.
Gilbert Brown
COE’s work with Chinese Universities continues to expand. He meets with International Programs tomorrow regarding the 3+1 program. This has to do with completing the undergraduate and graduate program. There are 43 faculty from China completing the Perspectives about American Higher Education graduate certificate.
Gilbert is working with Dr. Satterfield and Dean Hough to host a minority student recruitment event in Mobile, Alabama in June. The event will be entitled “Choosing Education as a Career.” So far 27 schools in the Gulf area are sending counselors and principals. The seminar will be similar in format to the Counselors to Campus program with a focus on quality COE programs at an affordable cost. Dr. Brown believes COE could create a Learning/Living Community for these students and encourage them to apply for the Multicultural Leadership Scholarship. Dean Hough is working with donors and potential donors to underwrite the event.
Meeting adjourned at 10:30 a.m.
