Juli Panza came to discuss two upcoming recruitment events. COE Transfer VIP Day, February 23, is a Majors Fair for students interested in transferring to MSU and want to explore education programs. The event starts at 9:00 a.m. at the Welcome Center and ends after a campus tour at 1:00 p.m. Juli had the programs listed with the name of who will be the representative. Gilbert Brown will welcome the group. The other event is Admitted Student Day on April 14, 2018, starting at 11:00 a.m. and ending after tours, which begin at 4:00 p.m. Students who have been admitted, but not paid their $125 confirmation fee will be invited. This is approximately 250 students. Julie provided the schedule for the day. The dean will come up with a program from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m., in the One-Room Schoolhouse. If needed, Greenwood room 215 will be available.
Dean Hough was informed that Kim requested changing the name of Student Services to Teacher Preparation Services regarding signage in the renovated Hill Hall. Kim said she and their staff had been talking about changing it for the last year. They have been trying to move away from the current name because it is often confused with campus student services. LC members believe it more prudent for decisions such as this to be vetted by the LC, not by a sub-group of staff in isolation. Dean Hough agreed to place the matter on a future LC meeting for further consideration, and asked that MSU Design and Construction be notified immediately NOT to make any name changes unless approved by the Dean’s Office in consultation with the LC.
The Missouri Public Affairs Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Banquet is Friday, April 13, 2018, 6:00 p.m., at the John A. and Genny Morris Conservation Center. Dean Hough has paid for a table of eight. If you are interested in attending, email him by the end of this month.
Dean Hough asked the group what they thought of the article, “Recovering Our Lost Public Esteem”.
- The comments could lead to a plan of action
- Need to take a broader look at it, combat it
- Reflects the writer’s background
- Need to look at broader institutional sites
- Need to look at the cost of education
- Look at three things: occupational prestige, occupational earnings, occupational discretions
Emmett stated that our University is requiring too many students to repeat course work they completed in high school as far as students coming in and having to enroll in history, English, and math classes. Dean Hough mentioned that public opinion is sometimes based on inaccurate information or on “outlier” experiences. Dr. Brown stated that he did not think higher education harbored as many “liberals” as some may think. He also stated that private IHEs are not always able to implement program changes faster than public IHEs, so he did not believe the perceived slow governance process was to blame for outside criticism.

Gilbert will be making a presentation at Lee’s Summit on March 6. He will work with the Dean on an agenda. In April, he is going to Pattonville to follow up on the Bear Partnership program.
Denise handed out a sheet on faculty accomplishments. James and Emmett were asked to email their information to Sharon.
James Sottile sent an email to the Dean regarding the need for three focus groups for CAEP, teacher mentors, new/recent teachers, and advisory group members to meet between March 1 and 6. Rose will be sending an email invite out as soon as she knows who to contact. Russ will work on contacting teacher mentors, who must be associated with our university. Denise will contact recent/new teachers. All of the department heads will work with their program coordinators to come up with names to attend the advisory group session. Everyone needs to work quickly so there is time for Rose to get everyone, including dinners, scheduled.
Information on program data per the DESE template was distributed. This shows the number of students by program. The dean asked department heads to look at Fall 2012 through Fall 2017. This will be discussed at the next LC. He also said there is currently $140,000 in salary savings. He asked everyone to sit tight regarding new hires. We will need to look at the number of students in programs before deciding on hires. The resources need to go where there is the greatest need
