ETHOS, the Educators’ Honors Society at Missouri State University, advised by Dr. Mandy Benedict-Chambers and Dr. Steve Jones, invited political science professor, Dr. Indira Palacios-Valladares to speak to elementary, middle, and secondary teacher candidates. Ozarks Teacher Corp Sponsors Scholarships for Hispanic Students
On Thursday, February 15, representatives of MSU College of Education and the Community Foundation of the Ozarks met with prospective candidates for scholarships in the Ozarks Technical Community College/Hispanic Initiative. The Ozarks Technical Community College program was founded in 2010 with a cadre of 16 teachers. The purpose was to attract candidates who would certify to teach and return to rural school districts in Missouri. The program realizes that rural schools need highly qualified teachers as do suburban and urban schools. Ozarks Technical Community College recognizes the changing diversity in rural Southwest and South Central school districts with a growing Hispanic population. At the February meeting, Hispanic students were informed regarding scholarship opportunities to fund their college education in order to prepare to teach and return to rural school districts. Teachers who are Hispanic and MSU graduates were present to interact with the candidates.
COE Joint Programs with Hainan Normal University
In December 2017, COE and Hainan Normal University’s College of Education had productive discussions about our shared history and current academic programs, and the prospects of pursuing joint academic programs. A COE task force composed of faculty from the three departments are developing proposals for joint academic programs. The faculty on the committee include Dr. Cathy Pearman (RFT), Dr. Emmet Sawyer (RFT), Dr. Tami Arthaud (CLSE), Dr. Denise Cunningham (CEFS) and Michelle Satterfield (CEFS). The faculty committee and Associate Dean, Dr. Gilbert Brown, had two initial meetings with Brad Bodenhausen and Peng Zhang from the MSU International Leadership and Training Center, about the proposed joint degree programs. Faculty committee representatives will present their programmatic suggestions to their colleagues in each department during the immediate period ahead. Tami Arthaud and Gilbert Brown are travelling to Hainan Normal University mid-May to for follow up on discussions with their Academic leadership and faculty.
One Missouri / Bear Partnership Program
On March 7, 2018, Dean Hough, Dr. Gilbert Brown and faculty from COE’s three departments, will be engaging in exploratory talks about establishing the Bear Partnership Program with the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District in the KC/MO area. Briefly, One Missouri is COE’s college and community partnership framework developed several years ago to connect the college with underserved areas in the rural and urban centers of the state. The Bear Partnership Program is a specific precollege outreach program inspired by One Missouri to collaborate with school leaders and faculty to identify prospective teachers from underserved areas of the state who may want to complete their teaching education through COE at MSU. COE seeks to partner with Lee’s Summit R-7 School District to identify three schools from the Lee’s Summit High Schools who will serve as the District’s and COE’s “Boots on the Ground” in working with teachers and high school students. Currently, COE and Pattonville School District in the St. Louis area support the Bear Partnership Program at their high school. Tentatively, identified students from Lee’s Summit and Pattonville will complete the Summer Bear Partnership Program this summer at MSU.
